I'm starting to meddle with carriers, and have been puzzled by air to air combat mechanics. I have t4 japan carrier with a mod +10% fighters and tier 5 fighters equipped. I understand that I have just 4 planes in squadron, but recently in most games against langley (t4 american) their fighter squadron takes out 2 out of 4 planes in the first second and remaining 2 in the next 2-3 seconds, while loosing maybe one.

Are there any kind of air combat mechanics I'm missing? Maybe he has a very skilled captain? A bug? Or is it "working as intended"?

The mechanics behind dogfights.

Tip: Don't fight with IJN fighters.  Only use them to defend against strike squads or scout with them.  Also you can use their presence to manipulate enemy fighter movements, but never ever let them dogfight if you can avoid it
