Rewards for eliminating enemy air

I've read on the forums that they are quite paltry compared to damaging ships. Which I believe, because my noob luck has me averaging about 65k damage in the Hosho and it has proved quite good to me.

 

I'm in the recent stages of both the Bogue and Zuiho, playing AS Bogue to Zuiho to compare results,

Both used same commander XP flag only, both losses, both about 15 minutes in duration.

 

Zuiho did almost three times as much damage, shot down 9 planes, Bogue shot down 11 more planes and vastly less damage yet the base xp was within 20 of eachother. 

I had another Bogue match where I did 14759 damage,  26 planes shot down, and got 1232 base xp.

 

I expected much less XP for just going air superiority
