DDs are tougher than Russian Cruisers

Between their speed, maneuverability, low profiles, and lack of citadels, I think it's fair to say that DDs are better at coping with damage.

Sims can AP citadel a Kirov at 7.6km... but cannot AP citadel a Budyonny over 3.6km... 4.7km for 130mm APs... paper ships these days...

Russian cruisers can also dish out massive damage compared to DDs (with exception of well-placed torp salvos). Most Russian cruiserss don't belong in close-range mixups without support. With some cruisers, angling keeps your damage manageable; with VMF cruisers, angling is a must to mitigate damage but you can and will take dmg no matter what you do if you engage within enemy's effective range without support. I've found that hanging back a bit and playing a fire support role while presrenting minimum possible target profile helps; let the enemy focus-fire easier targets while I pour fire in from second line. They're arty ships. (Note: Highest cruiser played is Kirov, so I can only speak from personal playing experience up to this level. Budyonny in particular seems to be able to mix it up a bit; I've killed a couple Schorrs and Chapeyevs and they seem fragile as well.)

 

Bogatyr can cruiser-tank and wade in. Svietlana and Kirov are both fragile and need secure flanks, and if you get focused by multiple ships in either one you're done.

Just but a full 8 hit broadside into a side-on Kirov with the 210mm AP of a Yorck for 808 damage... I wish I could citadel them...

I just took 14000+ damage in my Kirov from 4 HE shells fired from a NY at 12 km. 5 minutes before that, I must have taken 8000 damage from 1 stray AP shell from the same enemy at extreme range. It hit far behind my rear turret but still did massive damage.

 

Edit: Correction, that stray shell was from the previous game. This game I took a salvo from an enemy Kirov just to the side of my bow while I was facing him. I assume they penetrated and traveled the length of my ship. My return salvo did 10000 damage.

Which VML CLs have enough AA?  A T7 stock hull has a 21 rating iirc.

I had the exact same thought only I wanted to believe that the extra HP was the difference but after more games I'm sure DDs are  tougher.

They really are like a giant tashkents with citadels and worse rof.

At T4 and T5, maybe, but most people at those tiers aren't smart enough to capitalize on that.  Not when half of my games in Svietlana have been like this.

Agree.  It a very strange line of ships.  I think the platting was removed for wartime cargo such as straw and kerosene from the states.

I actually feel kind of bad when I one salvo my similar.enemy ship from way long range.   Shoot.... blame... devastating strike.   Not a very fun line yet.  Up to kirov so far.

You should explain that to the Kamikaze R I blew apart with the rear guns of my Wyoming , well okay it was a lucky hit I admit it, though the DD's whining in chat 

 

The new VMF cruisers are glass cannons, sneeze at them and poof citadel occur.  They are fun to play

Well, if you're talking about Moskva, then you might have a point. 

 

Some guy missed a number when putting in the values cause it has 0 mm of armor (to be fixed in 5.4.0.1).

Not really sure why, but I have a ton of fun playing Svietlana, Kirov and Budyonny. They are a challenge to play as other ships will focus fire on you if you let them. Gotta jink around(turning radius is not so hot) but if you use cover(islands) that helps a lot.
