That XP stays with ship and once that ship is "Elite" that XP can be converted to Free XP by using doubloons.  all "Elite" XP can be converted ... for cash

Like said above. Nothing, unless you want to spend money to convert to Free XP which you can use in any ship.

Last weekend, there was a special on converting Free XP (35 gold instead of the usual 25). In preparation for the upcoming RU cruiser line (the reason they made the special), I converted some of the standing XP (I targeted the ones in ships that were sold) and converted enough to be able to upgrade any ship hull or FCS to make it playable. I seldom skip a ship nowadays, but it is nice to be able to get past a stock ship as many are awful in stock form (e.g. Fuso). If you do not want to spend gold to convert to Free XP, then you have to grind sufficient XP in the new ship to able to research modules, and all the XP collecting dust in old ships (even sold ships) becomes useless. Your choice. Why all this? It is a way for WG to monetize the game.

Still just a bit confused.  Let's say I have a battleship and I decide that I want to concentrate on other ship types. This battleship has fully upgraded modules and has a significant amount of XP (but not enough to research the next level). Are you saying I lose all of that XP that I earned when I sell?

I don't mind spending gold to convert XP, but why is the game forcing the ship to be "Elite" in order to convert the XP? Seems like a waste of the player's time and discourages anyone from trying to move up the ladder.
