1,529 Noshiro_ Members 4,274 posts 4,649 battles Report post #20 Posted March 25, 2016 What's the meaning behind the song you posted, I wonder? And what is the history behind those unfortunate people? From wikipedia " The song is an account of the memories of an old Australian man who, as a youngster had travelled across rural Australia with a swag (the so-called "Matilda" of the title) and tent. In 1915 he had been recruited into the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps and sent to Gallipoli. For "ten weary weeks," he kept himself alive as "around [him] the corpses piled higher". He recalls "that terrible day" ... "in the hell that they called Suvla Bay [they] were butchered like lambs at the slaughter" ... "in that mad world of blood, death and fire". He is ultimately hit by a shell and awakens in hospital to learn that he has lost both his legs. When the ship carrying the young soldiers departs from Australia the band plays Waltzing Matilda while crowds wave flags and cheer. However when the crippled narrator returns and "the legless, the armless, the blind, the insane" are carried down the gangway to the same popular music, the crowd watches in silence and turn their faces away. The song contains elements that are inaccurate. The line that states "they gave me a tin hat" is anachronistic, as the British and Imperial armies were not issued steel helmets until 1916, the year after Gallipoli. The ANZAC landings were virtually unopposed. Furthermore, the sole Australian unit at Suvla, the Royal Australian Navy Bridging Train, landed early in the first day, but was left without orders until late in the afternoon, when they were set to building piers to receive the men and supplies of the later stages of the landing." Well the first lots of us were criminals anyway. However some of our beloved cultural icons were underdogs, and criminals- usually people who were performing criminal acts. Ned Kelly is definitely a debated hero. He was repeatedly given harsher penalties for his crimes than other criminals of the time, had a mother and siblings to provide for, since his father died and Ned was the oldest so it was down to him to provide for his family. However I believe what made him most iconic is probably his hand made body armor that kept him alive in the final shootout at Glenrowan. As for the poem by Banjo Paterson (such an Australian name) "waltzing matilda", one could interpret this man was of similar underdog status as Ned. Of course, you would need an understanding of classic Australian slang to realise this was someone who had no home, was trying to get a job where he could, and was poor. He stole a sheep with plans on eating it. Yes theft us a crime, but I do feel a bit of sympathy when it comes to stories of true blue Aussie Battlers. I really kind of have a soft spot for those with a will to live, and as a vegetable hater, I could empathise with a desire for meat. We don't always value underdogs though, as man from snowy River is a much more beloved poem by those who live more in the outback(I'm a city boy, but my grandmother lives in parts where there is barely a postal service, and she has no connection to the power grid: she uses a genny for her hot water and electrical needs because she is old fashioned like that How about other Australian heroes, such as Phar Lap, the racehorse that won Australians hearts after winning 36 out of 41 races(I personally blame the Americans for killing Phar Lap), sir Marcus Oliphant. I'd prefer not to glorify his contributions to nuclear weapons, but he did invent the cavity magnetron Sir John Monash(think the Australians success at Gallipoli in WWI) or even John Curtin could also be considered among Australia's greatest figures too. I think that is enough ranting though: my Aussie pride is something my American wife can't understand- do I am gonna assume most of the people here will be in the same boat Edit: ad Sn after thought - some of our greatest politicians ever were people who were pisstanks and brought in systems like our public health care system. John Howard also could be considered a hero, despite being the person who privatised Telecom(now Telstra, originally was known as Post Master General- we still have those PMG coverings in our streets) since he risked political suicide and rolled out the firearms buyback program as well as enforcing strict gun regulations. We haven't had a mass shooting since 1996. Work choices though was a crime worthy of an irukandji sting in my eyes

Well all I have to say to that is, I wish I didn't have to use and rotate VPN connections to access hulu and netflix(Australian Netflix is 1/5 of American in size) normally I would recommend using anydvd, but I hear they have recently had to shut down servers and cease making their unlocked because of an American DMCA copyright claim though I will admit that season 1 of Round the Twist is also a classic show that is best enjoyed through rose tinted nostalgia glasses
