Just curious... in-game they spell it Svietlana... but on the web and in news blurbs they spell it what i thought was the more common spelling: Svetlana.

Which is correct? One? Both?

Just curious.

It's spelled Светлана.  Romanization is somewhat inconsistant, given the "е" is pronounced "yeh."  This means it's pronounced svyetlana.

"E" is pronounced differently depending on what precedes it. In this case it's pronounced like in "veteran".

In any case, it's not stressed, so it's less pronounced.  I'm only on my second semester of Russian, so I don't know all the rules.  Someday :)

Wonder who/what inspired the IRN to name her Svetlana. Not many ships named after a female out there.

Rule is very simple actually: if preceded by consonant, it's pronounced like you would pronounce consonant + E + consonant in English (i.e. veteran, deli, ten, etc.); if preceded by vowel or hard/soft sign, it's pronounced as "ye" (like in "yellow").

Ah, so that's how it works!  Thanks a ton :)

Wow.. a mini-russian course - thanks guys! I've had the pleasure of meeting two Russians, one who was named Svetlana. Her pronunciation was very thick on the See-veyt and less on the lawn-uh....

I do find it intriguing they changed their spelling here and there... no doubt a minipatch will be coming soon to rectify the situation. :-)

Thanks everyone!
