Novik is pretty lame

Ok, it's kind of maneuverable, but the guns can't stay on target if you move, there kind of slow traverse. And the layout doesn't make this ship conductive to forward charging and wiggling side to side like you can in the Kholburg or Omaha. And the guns have as bad of arc as anything, have meh reload and damage, making long range firing not that practical. And then the survivability is so bad you don't want to get close. 

 

All in all it's not a memorable ship and one your done with in 4 games.

Love my Mikasa. Of the tier 2s, I liked Chikuma and Dresden/Emden.

 

So far I've found all the russian cruisers to be kinda mediocre.

There's not a tier 2 ship in the game worth a damn IMO. I'd rather fight in a t1 than any of the t2s. Novik was rough, Bogatyr is fun but not a keeper. Hearing great things about Kirov and Budyonny tho, which excites me since t5/6 is IMO the most fun tiering for cruisers.

I can't speak for the Budyonny (it looks great though), but I can say Kirov is worth it.

I love my emden,   it can be a good ship for the tier2 and holds up decent into t3.

I free XPed past it after one game but it's a decent ship at T3. Watched it get 3 kills, including an Omaha in a match. I wish it had those 4km torps both otherwise a decent ship.

The only thing I hate about the Novik is the "moon shot" arc on the guns when I fire at mid-to-long range. Can't hit the broad side of a barn.

 

Edited to add that I played it one game, then skipped. As someone else mentioned, I'd actually rather play tier 1 or tier 3.

Yeah... just started grinding the RU cruiser line today and I'm not impressed with the Novik.

 

By the numbers, it looks a lot like a Dresden with +1.2km range.  Sounds nice, except with the extremely high ballistic arc, it's very hard to hit anything in the outer part of the range envelope except BBs.  And you don't see many BBs when you're playing a Tier II ship.

 

Dresden has more guns and higher ROF, so you can usually hit a dodging target at the outer edge of its range envelope by moving your reticule a bit as you shoot to saturate a whole area with shells -- doesn't matter which way the target turns, it's likely to sail under at least a shell or two.  This trick doesn't work as well in the Novik, with fewer guns and a somewhat lower ROF.

 

And the Dresden has better hp; Novik is actually the lowest hp Cruiser of the tier by a fair margin.  The Novik has somewhat better armor, but IME most ships at Tier II are slinging HE so I don't think the armor comes into play very much.

 

If I do keep a Tier II cruiser long-term, it will probably be the Dresden.  I don't mind the Chikuma so I'll probably keep it until I need the slot for something else.  Already got rid of the Chester.  I'll definitely retire the Novik after another game or two, when I've got enough XP to get the Bogatyr.

One thing to remember is that Novik has been nurfed. She originally had 5 fixed torpedo tubes (2 on each side and 1 as a stinger). I know WG doesn't do fixed tubes, but they could add a pair of rotating tubes on each side or at least another gun to each side. There's room where the NON FUNCTIONING secondary gun is. Oddly enough, it's right over the outer door for one of the fixed tubes. Which begs the question why bother to include non functioning secondary guns?

You're literally a novice on board the Novik, and you're supposed to be in training to get used of the cruisers.

I finally got some pretty good games in this ship today ... the major difference: I didn't have to face off against 6 Bogatyr's and 2 St. Louis's each game! I'm not saying she's fantastic or anything but things sure went smoother when there weren't so many "semi-armored" cruisers around.

Dresden is lame? I over perform a St Louis in a Dresden. And that's 1 tier difference.

To be fair my skill when playing Dresden is better.

I like Emden and Umikaze at that tier, but that's about it. Bogatyr is a great ship, up there with St Louis. Looking forward to going further up the ladder.
