Captain Training - Have I screwed up?

Okay, so with the new Soviet cruisers coming, I was thinking of taking my 10 point Murmansk captain and incorporating him into the regular Sovier fleet. I've only gotten familiar with the concept of using premium ships as captain training tools just recently, and even by reading various threads, I'm still confused on how it works and what the best strategy is. (I never really thought about it since the Murmansk is my only premium ship, and at the time I started playing, a Soviet tech tree was still light years away). I did give the Murmansk captain perks, but he got respec'd in the Team Battles update/patch, and I didn't assign him any skills yet.

So, is it worth it to keep retraining him? How long would retraining take? Or should I get rid of him completely and start the training process from scratch with whatever Soviet captains I get on the free cruisers?

Never get rid of a 10 point captain...are you mad sir?  :amazed:

As to your other questions, well, I'm really not sure exactly what that is, so I'll just let someone else answer those. :honoring:

Put your captain into whatever ship you want them in (preferably when you get to maybe Tier 5) and use just a basic captain to get to that point. Put your murmy captain into the ship, start the retraining... put the captain back into your premium ship and play it until his bar goes from orange back to white. Then he is retrained and can go into the tech tree ship with full use of any captain skills you put on him. Each time you advance him, do the same steps. Start retrain, play the Murmy until retrained, put him back.

Another thing to remember... when you are in the middle of retraining, your captain will not use his skills to their full potential. (it says 50% reduction but some such as situational awareness don't work at all). However, even if they are being retrained and are under that penalty, they will have full (100%) use of all skills that they have learned while being used in a premium ship.

When the new cruisers come out, just put in as the ship's captain and start the retraining process as you would normally. He can still be used on your Murmansk with no penalty (even while retraining) and on the ship you are training him to (albeit with a 50% penalty until retraining is complete)

So, is it worth it to keep retraining him?

obviously

How long would retraining take?

10 points i.e. 10 level, 37000 xp to the next level, half of that to retrain i.e. 18500 xp, half of that if you pay 200 k silver (which you should) i.e. 9250 xp

not much

so, what i suggest to you:

- assign him to the tier 5 (kyrov) or tier 6 (budyonny) cruiser when you reach them, unless you want to play earlier tiers for an extended period of time,

- for lower tiers, play those training 1 (one) new captain and switching him from ship to ship, that way you will eventually have 2 good captains for the line

to retrain a captain with your murmansk (that way all the captain skills work with 100% efficiency) you just assign him to a ship and then switch back to murmansk, now you can play murmansk retraining the captain for the ship which you assigned him to; alternatively you can just assign him to a shipand then play that ship, the captain will function with 50% efficiency till retrained, but you will earn ship xp on the ship where you need it instead of piling useless xp on murmansk

Or should I get rid of him completely and start the training process from scratch with whatever Soviet captains I get on the free cruisers?

it's just silly

Since retraining a captain is around $2.50 US, I consider how much pain I need to go through to get the captain retrained.

If the Captain is 7 points or less, I use the Premium ship (have one for each country).  More than that, and the pain of grinding a captain with loss of earned XP takes a bite .

Mind you if the Captain is not on the ship, the ship is not earning any 'upgrade' XP for your efforts.  But if you can finish it off in a couple games and have fun too...   Go for it.

I used to free-XP past stuff, but that doesn't build you a 15 point captain.  Now I enjoy the grind and take my time.  There is no hurry to get to the uppitiest tiers.

Thanks for all the replies and advice. Oh, and I have another thing to ask? Are there any other advantages to using premium ships to train captains besides their skills always operating at 100%?

Like will using a premium ship speed up their retraining? Or will I have to buy premium time for that?

Just the ability to use their skills while retraining them

Most Premiums have 1.3-1.5 x XP earned per battle.  Being at a higher tier also helps.

I figure win or lose, the Atlanta gives at least 1,000XP/game average on a low point US captain.

Use the credit option to cut the XP in half.

Problem is that it doesn't help the team if I'm doing that, so I don't wish to inflict that much pain on the player base.

I figure 4-5 games max.  Any more and I use the Doubloon method.
