Looks like the benefit for manually selecting a target for your AA is getting buffed from 10% to 30%, but no changes are being made to aircraft durability or functionality. Since anyone who's paying attention will always be designating a target for their AA, this is basically a global 18% buff (110% -> 130%) to the efficiency of all AA on all ships. Discuss.

Well Manual AA perk kind of sucked

I have the manual AA perk on my Nagato. I should probably go for AFT instead 'cause, you know, Nagato secondaries. It does come in handy however. Just today, a fighter Ryujo sent his TBs at me twice, I dodged what torps they could launch and shot down all his TBs

This buff isn't for the perk (which is a 100% boost only for higher caliber AA). This buff is for the regular AA boost that everyone gets for manually designating a target. It is a global buff to all AA, regardless of captain skills. If anything, this just made that captain skill even less appealing, since the relative difference between the AA strength with and without it is now smaller.

I can always tell when someone's got the manual AA perk.  Planes going in.... and, huh, my squadron just dissolved.

It didn't really work as it was intended especially considering in a cruiser DF consumable took a 50% nerf if manual AA was used.

Those 4 captain points are a dear commodity considering only a fool takes MAA without AFT as well.

WG crapped the bed with the captain skills. Half of them don't have an impact worth noting and more than half aren't in the right level slot for what they provide. Also the very nature of having to interact with them as a tree doesn't work. Another large flaw is that to move one skill point pick just to see if it helps the entire tree must be paid for to relocate points.

They really need a complete rethink of the captain tree screen. Bandaiding it does little toward where it needs to be.

By anyone who's paying attention, you mean 5% of players?

Though I would agree to this for low and a bit of mid tier I found with my Ranger that people were focusing my squads a lot.

Agreed. Sure people don't pay attention at the lower tiers, but AA from ships isn't generally a big deal at those tiers anyway. At the tiers where AA is actually relevant, I find that people tend to be more aware of what's going on above them.

Honestly, I'm neutral on this position.  When WG nerfed the boosted AA dmg for manual selection to 1.1 instead of 1.5, i thought it was too much of a nerf.  However now that we have that AA captains skill, I think it now kind of makes that captain skill kind of useless.

Really feeling the buff.  Not sure what to do with my carrier anymore.

I'd still play carriers. And besides, I assume it applies to high tier matches. At mid to high tiers, mid tiers, and low tiers, you have players that don't have all the commander skills upgraded. Some of them don't even have that manual AA skill or aren't even interested in it.

For high tiers 8 to 10, I'd still play at high tiers because CV's are still powerful. Although it's harder to take on certain ships. For instance, I'd lose a lot of planes against the Des Moines and to a lesser extent, the Montana and Iowa. For me, I have a bigger priority on taking down destroyers. They're harder to take on but if you make them feel vulnerable, they will be vulnerable.

Also the same principles still apply, but now in a more apparent setting. Take on ships with weaker AA. Only go through the tight AA if in a desperate situation. You can only overwhelm powerful AA like the Des Moines' if you have 2 carriers coordinating a strike against one ship.

Again, this buff is to any ship designating an AA target- it has nothing to do with the manual AA captain skill. The manual AA skill gives a 100% boost to your large-caliber AA only when designating a target. This buff is to the universal boost that everyone gets with ALL of their AA even when designating a target, irrespective of captain skills.

And it hurts.  A lot!  It'll be pretty common for carriers to run out of planes tier 7-8.

i'm in Japanese carrier (t6) and watching my air power just get decimated by both american CV's and ship AA alike, really makes me wonder if i'm wasting credits and effort on it.

Invariably american air power alone is enough to wipe the floor with any fighter load out on the japan side.

The AA buff just makes Japanese CV nearly unplayable.
