A Question about HE Saturation damage

So last night I'm in my Storozhevoi (Tier II Russian DD), and I'm firing on the last remaining red ship, a Tier I Erie with 700-ish HP remaining.  I scored a total of 51 hits with my deck guns, some on the bow, some midships, and some on the stern doing a total of 400 damage.  (no fires)  His ship survived, and ended up sinking me with a couple of shots.

I'm familiar with the hp saturation of a certain ship segment, but since my hits were varied, this would not apply.  While I do not have a replay, I wonder if all my hits were on the starboard side of the ship, rather than the port side.  Might his entire starboard side have been hp saturated, but not his port side, of all 3 ship segments?  Is this possible?

No it is not. The segments usually hold about 4/5s of the ships health. It is impossible to saturate all 3 segments. It could be poor shot placements. The T2 DD fires really crappy HE rounds and will do 0 damage a whole lot. It is best to just aim for superstructure. Personally I just fired AP and hoped for the best lol the T2-3 ships where not very fun

Yeah, cause Storozhevoi guns are peashooters and he probably took so much HE damage that he had nothing left to damage.

Also I'm pretty sure you can't start fires from hits to the sides of the ship whether it be stern, bow or midship. The "armor" may have also mitigated most of the HE damage

He can start a fire as long it hits the ship. It does not matter if a 4in HE shell hit the thickest part of a Yamato armor belt at the water line, it has a chance to start a fire.
