Futurake and Aoba are a total waste of coins & XP

These two Japanese cruisers have only one advantage the 10 mile torpedos. Their guns and armor suck. I wouldn't recommend these ships to anyone and advise sticking with the lower Tier IV Kuma as it's much funner to play.The American, German and Russian cruisers (Murmansk) Tier V and VI are far superior. I feel cheated. lol Can I have my doubloons back? lol

Furutaka is pretty bad compared to Omaha.  However, Aoba is great.

 

Both have high caliber guns, and those can easily citadel light cruisers such as Omaha or Cleveland.  Aoba is a fast-firing gun cruiser, I loved it.

Can't say they're exactly ideal, but they're not exactly bad either. Hold out until the Myoko and you'll thank me later.

That's not sarcasm either. The Furutaka and Aoba are both snipers. They've got the camouflage to get into effective range (read: long) and then start dropping AP into citadels and HE onto hardpoints. Those torpedoes are just secondary weapons, to discourage closing range or for ambushing the odd battleship.

Also, a useful thing about Aoba, if you point your nose at the enemy 2/3rds of your guns can shoot and you're presenting a very small target in return.

 

It's AP will crack open the citadel armor of any cruiser it'll ever see. 

 

It is a good boat, it is however a different boat.

Switch to ap..... U can citidal quite a lot of things.... Including unangled bbs.... And since bb usually at lower tiers don't even try to angle or don't feel a need to angle against cruisers even when it is close range.... U can cit them

This is a learn to play issue, both Furutaka and Aoba are very capable when played correctly, since they use 203mm guns before any of the other cruiser lines, it's a strange learning curve. Instead of spamming HE and settings fires, the 203mm guns are about AP hits. As others have said, hitting citadels with AP on these ships is very rewarding.

I hated the Furutaka before I learned how to use it. Its arguably still one of the best tier 5 cruisers. Guns are great and the torps are good. Even if you don't like it so much, Aoba is amazing (similar but more and faster firing guns and better AAA as well)

Furutaka's 10km (not mile) torpedoes are actually not as effective as her 6km ones due to slower speed. There's mistake one. 

 

Both ships have good armor *for their tier*, especially if you angle properly, and their guns are hard hitting and effective. The 203mm they both use does have a lower ROF than Kuma's 140mm guns, so you have to aim and place your shots more carefully. 

 

Also, funner is not a word. And you refer to ships as she, not it. 

 

If you spent doubloons to buy Furutaka or Aoba, you did it wrong. 

 

I can understand you prefer the Kuma; she's a fun ship. But even if Furutaka and Aoba aren't for you, they're solid ships for many players. Just FYI, if you dislike the Furutaka and Aoba, you're going to have similar issues when you get to t7 and above on both the German and USN cruiser lines.

I ragequit Furytaco. Konigsberg has me spoiled with fantastic guns and range. I've citadel'd battleships with it. But switching to the FuryTaco, it struck me as a camel (horse designed by committee). It has big guns. In a weird arrangement. It has a range that puts it into the (call Kenny Loggins because I mean) danger zone, but it has a rudder shift like a battleship. It can't turn to knifefight. It doesn't have the range it needs. The elements are there sure, it CAN do fine, but I found it too exasperating to play. Maybe I'll grind it to Aoba. Maybe I won't. But I do see the reasons to criticize.

there got good guns and not that bad a ship, I rather have good accurate guns than a ship with armor that has a hard time hitting anything, you have to play to there strengthens and weakness, as in all ship lines and all tier, you can not just play 1 style and expect to be top dog

Yeah, the single biggest weakness of the ship is that she's forced to use the pathetic 203's.  They're badly outclassed by the 152's carried by all other cruisers, in basically every possible way.

 

Even if the Furutaka magically scores a perfect Citadel with EVERY SHOT IT FIRES??  The Omaha still delivers almost 50% more damage.

I think the Furutaka gets a bad rep because you actually have to forget everything you've learned about Japanese cruisers and start over.  Its the start of a totally different play style.

 

If you don't like the Furutaka, don't grind IJN cruisers any further as each of the following is essentially just an improved version of the previous tiers cruiser.  At least that has been my impression up to the Myoko.  

 

Lastly, IJN cruisers past the tenryu are amazing ships.  The light cruisers were no fun to me.

My bad on the Aoba as I didn't do the upgrades which I normally do right away. I do like it and gives me access to more maps due to fighting higher tier ships most of the time. I'll give it the thumbs up. The Furutaka still sucks in my humble opinion due to the slow firing guns. lol

Aoba is a good ship, but I think Nurm and Cleveland are better, and it seems the tier VI Russian cruiser is a powerhouse; in the other hand, OMG furutaka its AWFUL, a crap ship by all means, fully upgraded its crap, stock its almost unplayable. Fail ship.
