  1. 1. Ships designed to be raiders will be what in a fleet action game?

The Graf Spee thread got me thinking this way. A number of ships were designed for independent operation the Graf Spee among them. How will that translate into a game that is primarily fleet action based? And there is a poll! :Smile_teethhappy:

Thanks for listening.

There is a teir system used to match ships against other ships with similar combat capabilities, so this shouldn't be too much of a defining factor

Like in World of Tanks, they would probably scout around and destroy other smaller ships to prevent them from doing the same.
I don't really see the Graf Spee as a scout...

I'd go with a Panther II, she's big, she isn't the fastest or best armored..but when those guns start firing... :Smile_playing:

ships that are meant to decline action in the face of superior firepower will suffer in this game, so thats early battlecruisers and the deutchlland class cruisers from germany for starters.

I don't think raider type ships will necessarily be at a disadvantage, but they will require different tactics and have to fill a specialized roll. For example, the German 'pocket battleships' will have to take up the roll of cruiser support when heavier ships are in the fight.  They are not going to survive long if they try to go line of battle and slug it out with an Iowa.  However, they could prove capable of decimating destroyer and light cruiser screens.  The same is true of most battlecruiser type vessels.  They will be support units, not the main battle force when heavy battleships are out and about.  Against older battleships where they have a speed advantage they can do hit and run, as well as taking out cruisers at a range the cruisers cannot effectively respond at.  Essentially, raiders and battlecruisers will have to fulfill Admiral Fisher's original concept of being a high speed support force, out run what they don't outgun and outrange and outgun anything that can catch them.

That was my thought as well. While I'm certain from what has been written there will be plenty of islands to fight around a lot of thse battles took place in open ocean. The speed advantage of some ships might be negated by the map having an edge.

I doubt there would be a advantage or disadvantage for ships like the Graf Spee it has big guns that can kill other ships. Not much to worry about.

I don't believe that any ship will be a scout in this game.  Scouting will be done by aircraft, and raiders will be integrated within the fleet, unless they are played by lone wolves who want to suicide fast to play their next ship.

There is a legitimate way, maybe, for Raiders to break off from the fleet and set up ambushes. While it's true that aircraft are the primary scouts, what if the raiders break off before being scouted, and move to a position the enemy fleet may not expect?

That's me being highly optimistic though. We all know aircraft speed >>>>> Ship speed.

I doubt there will be scouts why? Ships can't go fast enough and when they turn the lose a huge ammount of speed and energy.
