The NC's Mysterious Citadel Armor at Close Range

At close range, the NC's citadel armor seem to be somewhat random or extremely tough. I've taken a CA into a training room and fired AP at the broadsides of Iowas and NCs at close range, the Iowa would take consistent and multiple citadel penetrations per volley, whereas on the NC, I would get more regular shell penetrations and relatively few citadels.

I've fired under the smokestacks and  the turrets, and it feels like Iowa's citadel hitboxes extend across the entire side of the ship. It's as if the Iowa's belt armor is worse than the NC's because of this. Anyone else experience this or know why this happens?

And this is one of the main reasons I come to the forums-to learn things about the game I would not have found out myself.

Sorry I can't answer your question but I appreciate you coming here with your findings.

I have no idea why NC is hard to citadel compared to Iowa.  if i had to guess, its to discourage an aggresive playstyle where as NC can somewhat get away with it.

The rounds need to punch my front turret mags to cit, it seems. From being hammered in my NC.

I don't think I've managed to cit an opposing NC yet though. Window of opportunity for hitting her citadel seems to be tiny.

North Carolina has a 12-inch belt with a 15 degree angle.  Iowa has 12.1 but I think it's straight.  I've had zero issues citting North Carolinas in other battleships; if anything the Iowa is only easier to cit because of the longer hull (and bigger propulsion spaces).

At over 14 kilometers I can double or triple citadel North Carolinas with even Japanese 14" guns and do so with frightening regularity.

I kind of don't want to tell you where to actually shoot to citadel because it was something I enjoyed seeing people not do against me

North Carolina's citadel isn't really any better armored than Iowa's, it just sits extremely low, much like the citadel on tirpitz, North Carolina's is pretty much entirely under than waterline, making it very difficult to hit at close range. Generally to hit it, shells have to have at least a small angle of fall to reliably hit it, hence why its only really easy to hit at longer ranges, but nearly impossible to hi at short range. Unfortunately because of this, north carolina's belt also sits extremely low so she takes a LOT of 33% hits.

time to retry with Yorck AP then.

That stuff has good punch and arcs a lot, even up close, which allows it to actually citadel Cleveland with relative ease.

NC has a 120mm bulkhead behind her main belt. Iowa does not have this. This is why NC is harer to citadel at extremely close ranges.

Except if your shooting an NC when its facing you then suddenly you can do 3 cit pens as if it were broadside strangely...I still don't know how this happens to me when I'm in my NC.

If the shells hit the bow of the ship and penetrate, the main turret magazine is right behind it, a literal all-or-nothing.  At close range it's impossible to angle your ship against an entire broadside because of the vastly different angles shells fly at you from; best chance is to try angling to one side and pray.

This explains a lot. Thanks. Generally, though, I find both Iowa and North Carolina easy to cit, the latter can be cit with anything 14" and up at almost any range. The dispersion will guarantee that at least one shell will find the citadel.

So arguably it's safer to brawl in the NC than fight at a distance?

You...are aware that the Iowa has weaker armor than the NC..

Right?

North Carolina has belt armor??  That's crazy talk, or at least I'm not brave enough to test this out by sailing broadside on to everything.   Seriously tho, NC has pathetically weak side armor.

the only cit iv had on a NC was on hot spot with my tirpitz i shot him at 20km and the round landed just behind the second turret at a 60° angle and it citted.  beyond that iv never seen a nc get citted.

the front citadel on a nc seems to be located int he same position the cleaver's fore citadel is if that makes sense.

depends on where you get hit that all or nothing armor scheme means i can pelt a  nc with ap on my cruiser and do decent dmg per salvo that would drop to nothing if it landed anywhere but the [edited]and fore ends.
