Torp speed with range reduction...you're stupid not to take it right?

As a Jap DD how do you not take this skill? I'm surprised there aren't tons of "NREF THSI ALRDY!" topics already.

For the IJN ships especially, it's all but mandatory.

You've got plenty of excess range, you never actually launch at maximum range if given the choice, and every last knot you can squeeze from your torpedoes is precious.

If you're in anything tier V and lower [with the exception of Umikaze], you shouldn't take it. If you're in a Mutsuki or Hatsuharu, bless your poor soul first off, and it can be tricky making torpedo runs still because of the small margin in which you can safely launch them. Fubuki and up, however, it's pretty darn useful.

Because the higher the range = the higher the reduction. Mutsuki for example, you go from having a 4km window to a 2km one. 20km torps may be faster, but those missing 5km can really make a difference

It helps some IJN DDs and hinders others...

Tier V Minekaze/Kamikaze R, for example, can't stealth torp if you have that skill.

Past the Minekaze I can't see why you wouldn't. The shortest range torpedo is on the Mutsuki, and with this perk is shoots out at 8km. In exchange its speed is boosted to 64knots, an 8.5% increase in speed. Since 10km shots are kind of hit or miss (no pun intended) that seems worth it.

Going past that all the way up to Tier 10 you can get, what, 72knot torpedoes that only go 16km? That's faster than the current fastest torpedo in the game AND further than anything else that isn't a Japanese torpedo without this perk. I'd definitely call this a win-win.

Zao actually still wins out by 4kts.

I did not take it as I have the Kamikaze 'R' and Tachibana ( tier 5 & 2 ) and use my high tier DD capt. in them for playing with friends who do not have higher tiers then that . I am grinding the Kagero right now .

Well the minekaze and Isokaze don't have the range

I honestly managed reasonably well in the Mutsuki for ranked battles before these changes -- But good lord, does 5 knots make a difference in accuracy. I wouldn't understand why someone wouldn't take it when 10 KM is an excessive range -- That only gets higher and higher your tier. Definitely take it T6 and up -- If it's T5 and below, don't.

Besides, dropping torps at almost maximum range is useful when you know theres a USN DD there, so even if your torps get spotted, you wont, and you will have plenty of other opportunities to drop some more

I'm trying to use it in a Kamikaze R...it's not going well.

On the bright side, I can pretend that I'm controlling a US destroyer with all guns knocked out.

It's usable, but Concealment Expert is necessary.  Otherwise it becomes a USN DD without the superb gun handling.

Minekaze and below...definitely not going to work. I think even with Concealment Expert, the Minekaze will only have a 0.2 km stealth-torping range, or something along those lines.

As for Mutsuki and up...I think there's definitely no reason not to take it. Once you start getting out past 10 km or so, torp spreads had probably gotten so wide as to be basically useless.

This is probably going to be a bit of a thorn in the side for trying to re-train IJN DD captains, since I'm going to have to either:

a) Deal with using a DD captain on the Atago (which is never fun)

b) Deal with having to use the Kamikaze R without any good stealth-torping capabilities.

exactly. Superintendent is far more important if you want to remain alive, and you technically cant choose 2 tier 3 captain skills AND get the tier 5 concealment expert

As someone who can make the Sims 49 knot torps work, I don't really see the need. I'd much rather improve the guns so you have better chances against another DD. Especially late game, having good guns can make all the difference.

Next commander skill coming .. Artillery upgrade: add+40mm to your primary guns.  I really dont like commander skills that drastically change a ship. I think this is a very dangerous slippery slope WG is riding on. To keep people playing this game must be fun. I dont want to lose because I took commander skill paper and matchmaking put a player in with commander skill scissors.

Does anyone know if this skill causes the torps to get increased detection range?

Because right now, VG feels pretty OP.

I can easily dodge all torps thrown at me. :teethhappy:

and all my torps I throw at everybody are easily dodged. :sceptic:

Where's the good place to start taking it, Mutsuki?

Mutsuki becomes like a Minekaze. I tried it on the PT server. It works but it's very risky. Note, even with this skill, 64kts are still slower than Minekaze's 68kts torps. Not to mention, slower reload.

Mutsuki can make them work. However, Hatsuharu can't since she's less stealthy and slower. Personally, I'd say it stops being a choice once you hit Fubuki with the 15km torps.
