So, about the german tier 10 battleship's name ...

The german tier 10 battleship is very likely going to be the H41 design. However, instead of just calling it H41, WG has decided to give it a proper name. With so many historical names to choose from, that shouldn't be too hard, right?

I'm talking about names like Lutzow, Brandenburg, Preussen, Lothringen, Schlesien, Nassau, Ostfriesland, Thuringen, Kaiser, Blucher ... I'm partial to Lutzow.

However, in this video~

At the 4:18 timestamp, you can hear that they've given it the name Großdeutschland. Ignore the english voiceover, you can hear the russian dev say 'Großdeutschland' very clearly.

"What's the problem with that?"

Großdeutschland is also the name of a panzer-grenadier division that operated on the eastern front.

One very important thing to note about this division is that they were heer, and not SS. These were the regular soldiers, that didn't necessarily believe in the nazi doctrine. Conscripts, regular soldiers, that sort of deal.

That said, the Großdeutschland is division not entirely clean. Although relatively minor in the grand scheme of things, there is photographic evidence of some of their members being involved in warcrimes.

So, while the name itself is nice and bad-[edited], befitting a tier 10, part of me wonders about the choice. Why would a belorussian company name a tier 10 battleship after a german division that fought on russian and eastern-european soil?

And also a name that defies the German habit of that era to pick a name honoring a person?  Blucher or Hindenburg would have been just fine.

Probably because they thought they just made up a random name and didn't do a quick google search and see that the first thing to come up is the panzer-grenadier division.

It's a concept not necessarily a division bro.

Remember the speeches about bringing back together german speaking folks from the countries they got put into after WW1 Versailles Treaty reduced the size of Germany?

One Germany for Germans and all that?

Simply means Great Germany basically.

Kind of like the French having the audacity to name ships after Alsace and Lorraine.

Typo, since fixed.

I know. I likely speak better german than 99% of this forum. Doesn't change the fact that the ship and the division still share a name. I mean, WG wouldn't call a ship 'totenkopf' because of the connections either, despite that just being the word for 'skull'. Right?

I still don't know why WG can't stick with project names for project ships unless it actually did have a name during the period it was drawn up...

I prefer the H41 designation honestly, unless there was a planned name for the design as previously mentioned.

I has herad somewhere that one of the ships was going to be named Hindeburg.. You know... H-class... hindenburg... but that name has been given to the tier 10 cruiser. Anyways I have no problem with the name. After all it translates to Greater Germany, think of it that way if the division baothers you.

It's called a made up name by postwar Wehraboos.

All these names are significant to anyone that knows much about German ships:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Preu%C3%9Fen_(ship)

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brandenburg-class_battleship

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SMS_Lothringen

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SMS_Schlesien

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SMS_Ostfriesland

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SMS_Th%C3%BCringen

Especially the Lutzow, Blucher, Kaiser, and Nassau. Any of those names would have been confusing to people and several of these would make good premiums. I am kind of partial to Ersatz Bismarck personally...

Lol you're letting your imagination run a bit too wild. That is how conspiracy theories and paranoia get under way.

Großdeutschland was one of the names allegedly being considered for an H-class battleship. Whether it's true or just a rumor, it's probably why WG chose that name. Sharing the name with some tank division or whatever is pure coincidence. Heck, not even coincidence., It's just irrelevant.

I honestly do not see the issue with the name... I think you might be looking too deep into this Lert

Since Großdeutschland fought on the Eastern front I would guess that they would not use that name. They will take either a person or maybe a city name or Region name.

There is a common superstition that a boat with no name is bad RNG luck.:P

Don't think something with the Name Deutschland inside would be matching. Hitler let the Deutschland be renamed 1939 because he didn't want to have a ship with this name sunk.

Rather would think along the line of former German emperors like Karl der Große.

I can appreciate you having a much deeper perspective then 99% I don't doubt this whatsoever.

All you have to do is just make Wargaming aware of it through the proper channels.  You know they will shut down a name or flag if it has the wrong connotations.  I was aware of that name in infantry and history, but I never gave it much though.  Kind of like naming a ship after Reserve Battalion 101 C.  Some things you don't do obviously, but it's really just a matter of not being aware of the implications of it.

Reread your OP.  Nobody is clean.

Hitler was very Antsy Pantsy about stuff like that. Originally the Wilhelm gustloff was going to be named the Adolf Hitler, Hitler suggested it be named something else in case it was sunk..... it was sunk, in what turned out to be the greatest maritime dissaster of all time. Deutschland, renamed Lutzow, actually survived the war.... but was blown up after the war by the Russians in a weapons test.

"Grossdeutschland" as name wouldn't really make sense either, since the german High Command renamed the original "Deutschland" to "Lützow" from fear of having major morale/prestige issues if the ship got sunk. Personally, I think that the Project name "H41" will do fine.

We already have a ship called Nürnberg.

Besides, the names "Karslruhe", "Kawachi" and above everything "Colorado" are heavy triggers for me, but people don't seem to care at all.

WG has been assigning names to projects since alpha, just look at the Izumo, Zao, and Myogi. They were all projects or proposals and not actually launched or christened
