Kolberg is pretty good in the right game

I don't know i always had bad games with the Kolberg but my last game with it was my only great  game with it, not kills wise but hits and damage wise, in fact a lot of times my final games in a lot of ships happen to be good probably sending me message like don't go, anyway sorry for the lack of info and try not to turn away because of the dialogue, btw hows the t4 ship? I'm trying to show ya how good of a game i had in this ship so why not the Kolberg?

Islands are your friend... Gun arc takes practice like anything...I found it a fun ship...despite it's nasty rep....

The tier four was garbage when I played it, but apparently it received a buff at some point after that and is decent now.  The tier five is an amazing ship.

  I'm grinding the tier IV now, and it ain't fun.   Your guns are bigger, but it won't hit the broadside of a barn from the inside...   It doesn't help that the captain I switched over from the Kolburg isn't trained yet.  Longest 4000 xp of my life...  I particularly hate the New Dawn map in it- everyone scatters- from your team- and the reds pick you off at their leisure.

 

Same experience with both the Kolburg and Dresden:  Lots of suck, lots of frustrating games pummeling your enemies with shot after shot for little damage, etc.  Then, when I'm about to get the next in line, a couple of great games...

 

  They're very situational- if the stars align, and all your opponents are dumb as dirt, you can do well.  Mostly though, they aren't.  Or they have friends helping them, or you can't get in the right position, or you get tossed into the shark pool in tier 4 and 5, or, or ,or.  I'd rather have a ship that can do well in any situation.

I have actually good memories of the Kolberg. She is a great DD killer with that fire rate. Once a DD pops smoke and hides, i just rain Shells in there and look, hit afer hit while the DD panics around

I've been trying to play her exclusively as a DD killer with mixed results. Against other cruisers like the St. Louis she usually gets wrecked. She puts out a good rate of fire but HE never really seems to be terribly effective.

 

Looking through the ship's stats I noticed that her Citadel has minimal armor, something like 10mm if I remember correctly, HOWEVER her deck has 70mm of armour. This would lead me to believe one might be better off fighting other cruisers at near maximum range to prevent AP pens, though I suppose when matched against someone firing HE this wouldn't help much. Not to mention that the Kolberg's range is under 10km which is less than the St. Louis and all of the Tier 4 cruisers. Even at her maximum range the gun arc is huge and the projectiles travel slowly. Luckily she has a good rate of fire so missing with a salvo won't leave you high and dry for 30 seconds or more like a BB. 

 

With all that being said I'm not sure what the best role for this ship is.... Like I mentioned above I've been trying to only go after DD's with it and keep maximum distances from other cruisers and BB's with some success (my last game I was able to annihilate 4 of those agile little dudes, but that has also been my only decent game with it)... if anyone has any suggestions I'd be happy to hear them
