First, I want to give a very big thank you to dseehafer for his excellent work on his What's the difference? thread series.

He had recently made one on the Admiral Hipper class (link: http://forum.worldofwarships.com/index.php?/topic/64846-whats-the-difference-admiral-hipper-class). I then noticed that the in-game Hindenburg midsection/superstructure has a strikingly similar resemblance to the Prinz Eugen. It is my understanding that the Hindenburg is a ship designed purely by WG, so I am wondering if WG didn't actually use the Prinz Eugen as its basis and then modified it as a tier 10 ship?

Yes, I think the Hindenburg is basically a fantasy version of a scaled up Hipper or Prinz Eugen with increased displacement and triple-gun turrets.  It's not a bad guess for what German cruiser design would have evolved into had they tried to make something significantly stronger than the Hipper.

Hind and Roon are paper designs, so my guess is that WG decided to extend the front and back for better turrets, while the engine rooms remained the same size.

Not paper, but fake based on reality.

As for the OP, they look almost identical from a side view. So WG probably did in fact use PE as a basis.

For the Hindenburg, it is rather clear. But for the Roon, its design is rather different. And one major design flaw that I noticed with the Roon is that its two twin 55mm AA guns have very poor placement right next to the double mount 150mm gun turret. I've even seen them clipping into the turret! I probably would've tried to place them one deck lower, and have a small cutout for space into the deck they are currently sitting on.

Wouldn't surprise me, from the front, the base hull basically looks the same on all 3 of these ships.

Am I the only one who thinks that when people see a ship named Hindenberg they'll drop everything just to set it on fire?

The Roon looks like a Nurnberg with 8" guns.  I can imagine WG looked at a few candidates for the three turret triple mounted layout which includes 2 turrets in front and one at the back, Scharnhorst style.

Roon is just a bit messed up, honestly.

Roon looks like Tonks messing up a trick with her nose.
