So help me understand Mogami

Just went from Myoko to Mogami, re-trained my captain via Atago, but I really don't do much in high tiers. Whether I survive or not, my damage numbers are usually in the black, below 50k, often closer to 30. I've had a series of bad luck games with less than 1k damage, as well.

Current setup:

Captain-- Situation awareness T1, Expert Marksman T2, Superintendent T3, Advanced Firing Training T4. Not enough points for T5 yet, but going for Concealment Expert.

Mods-- Main Battery 1, Gun Fire Control, Damage Control 1, Steering Gears 2, Concealment System

Using the 155s with this gives me about 1-2km buffer for firing without detection, concealment range of 10.5km, battery range of 18.1km.

I still seem to get detected basically constantly regardless of what I do with positioning, so I just deal with it. I wiggle as much as I can to be a difficult target, because any shell that touches me (I notice it doesn't matter where it touches me, either. Graze hit across the fantail where no citadel spaces actually are? 15k damage for you!) will result in a citadel hit. More than one takes me out of the game-- either I'm sunk or I've got ~500 health left.

So help me understand how to succeed in this ship, because my perspective isn't helping.

i just got mine as well.  I will be staying 13km+ and wiggle a lot.    16.4km  detection when firing is bad anyway.   we have flat shooting gun, so  start lot of fire  stay angled and wiggle.  angle will save me from  other cruisers.    someone actually say just use front guns and don't go too fast.

I went to the 203mm and have had considerably more success. Im not a fan of the 155 and the 15 second reload sits well with me. I didnt understand the 155s on the mogami when from the furutaka on up to the zao they all use the 203mm.

You also can take last stand (IIRC) the one that allows movement and turning if rudder/peller goes out.

IMO IJN cruisers are just large DD

I think you are just getting too far forward and getting focus fired.

Either that, or you're falling into the trap of using your rear turrets inside of 16km.

If you want high damage, spam HE at everything (except battleships/cruisers at the closer ranges)

Learn to fire HE over islands and the such.

If you don't have islands to conceal you, don't worry about concealment and try dodge salvos with your rudder.

Overall you'll see that you'll do around 200 damage per HE shell, most of your damage will be from fires.

I personally prefer the 203mm, I get more consistent damage numbers from that and somehow I survive more.

im not quite at the mogami yet, about halfway through myoko, but id first get the 203s. higher damage and fire chance, and you dont need to be exposed as much to fire. streaming 155s basically means sailing straight which is bad.

other than that, its like atago. never be alone and support other cruisers or battleships. always angle unless youre about to fire, otherwise citadels are a comin.

I do about 170dmg/shell from kiev, so 200 is bit higher than kiev.   it also has  higher fire chance.     9x6.6 is 60/min   just using front guns. so pretty good anyway.

I use 155mm on my Mogami with great success.  The shell velocity is much faster than the USN 6inch guns and as result the firing arch is pretty flat even at longer range.  Get the level 1 fire training skill for your commander to benefit from an even higher ROF.

As with all higher tier IJN CA you have to armor angle, move and adjust speed constantly.  It is more a sniper than brawler, but dont under estimate the effectiveness of the 155 AP if you are under 12km.  Its very flat trajectory will hit right where you aim and score massive citadel hits on CA and even NC and Amagi.  That said at under 12km you need to be in a I'm winning for sure situation because you wont last long in a closer ranger brawl.  Use its low detect to duck in and out of stealth when your being targeted.

Your leaders in FOG are really cool and powerful.  Why is this question not in your own website?  Oh wait because FOG is a bunch of fake cartoons that are too cool to talk to humans

Calm down friend :). If you look that's a NAFGO person, not FOG. Sure, both are anime but they are different groups. I am in FOG myself.

I don't have a lot to add other than I get the feeling like you're trying to rely on stealth firing more than you should. I've never had advanced firing training and such never have had the ability to stealth fire but I've had good success with Mogami. Someone mentioned it earlier but get basic firing training if you're going to use the 155s.

I tend to use Mogami as a DD hunter, surprise CA killer (if you can get a 10km broadside, use AP and they are toast), and a BB fire starter. I also tend to fire and retreat with it...unleash a few salvos then back off to go undetected again.

Also, forget using the torps unless you're in a knife fight. Their arcs are horrible as they are for most IJN cruisers (except Atago).

The Mogami was once T7 and complete overperforms there so she switcht the position with the Myoko.

The 155mm guns are historical since the caliber allowed the IJN to build more of those ships. 155mm were count as light cruisers even the ship weight as much as a heavy one. They prepared the Mogami to upgrade them to 203mm if a war was imminent. That was done 1940 or so. The 155mm turrets later served as secondary on the Yamato class. So much for were they are from.

Keep distance, never sail straight, spam HE. With 15 shells per broadside you will score some hits and have a good chance to start a fire. With BFT you get 100 shells per minute in the air what complete shred DD's and other cruisers near by. If you angle you have a chance to reduce the damage from other 203mm cruisers, it will hardly stop the 38cm or 41cm shells from BB's. If you are in the open, you are dead meat. With a BB I don't have to aim serious to hit the citadel, it feels like the whole ship is one. You are fast, agile for the length and weight and a low profile so use it. I retrained my DD captain in the Atago with the same camo value and I was suprised how often I vanish after those destroyers were gone.

The 203mm isn't bad but you loose 3km range and that insane ROF.

And when the side mounted 155's were removed from Yamato they were then used as the main battery on the light cruiser Oyodo. :)

If those turrets could talk! :hmm:

That's my boss/higher up. All I was saying is NAFGO/KNTAI and FOG/TFS/FBS are different. I am trying to be kind to you, and will continue to. Anyway, really nothing else to say. Have a good day mate.

On topic: I am horribad with Mogami but her guns ARE nice. Hyper accurate with nice HE. I just keep getting into bad placement (my fault) and die. My DPM is good but avg damage is 9k below par.

Love my Mogami.   I prefer the 155's myself.  Don't go for the BBs or CAs, but try to be a DD/CL killer.  I don't lead the pack, but hang back a bit and let the battle develop for a bit before choosing the direction, targets I'd like to attack.

I did have a Yamato come from around island last night and one shot kill me though.  That wasn't fun.   How he remained undetected that long in the battle I do not know.   Shifty little @^##@^@er though.    :)

Have some friendly ships in front of you acting as cannon fodder.

As flippant as this might sound, it's as good as any other advice in the thread.  With the 155's especially, you need to be alive for a long time to get good damage numbers, and you'll get more and more dangerous as the game goes on (where you can angle the weak armor against one enemy ship, instead of trying to find the best angle against the whole enemy fleet).  Early on, it's no sin to hunt enemy destroyers, waiting for an enemy to be isolated that you can focus on, or looking for a place to set up a torpedo ambush.  Switch over to offense when you know the positions of the enemies that can vaporize you, or when you have a few nearby friends that can absorb some damage.

In a recent game I actually hung back to protect the cap, wound up being the only ship protecting it, sank a destroyer and a cruiser who got froggy.

When their North Carolina sank me, our North Carolina called me a coward.

For defending an objective.

I just can't win.
