Hunt down the little cowards and wreck them. Against another Kuma or a Phoenix [maybe even Tenryu, or basically anything your 140mm can get through], use AP when the trajectory of the shots is more or less perpendicular to the part of the armour you're shooting it. The choice of Ammo can mean all the difference Torpedoes are not your primary armament, but in a gunfight with a battleship, you're going to want to use them, so do your best to get in close and launch some shipkillers their way when their guns are reloading. ← Only do that when no one else is around though, otherwise you can and will die. Kuma is an amazing little gem of the cruisers. Edited June 26, 2016 by Xannari

Advanced Fire training, Detection, The Torpedo loading bonus ( name escapes me) will help. She is slow gun but strong HE damage. Stay and fight in islands to use her low profile and speed. If you are in open ocean do not run a straight line for more than a boat length.

33 HermanBix Members 179 posts 4,071 battles Report post #6 Posted January 15, 2016 Kuma was a light cruiser designed as flagships for destroyer squadrons. So to be honest, really does work well in conjunction with other destroyers. As stated earlier in this topic, just play it like you would a destroyer. I really do enjoy playing both the Tenryu and the Kuma. Shoot I just wish they would depict the Furutaka in its final configuration with the three twin armament turrets as apposed to the six single armament turrets. Always!!! try to keep your maximum fire range and don't do salvos, just press the mouse button and correct your fire 1 by 1. Wish u all the best.
2 jsapyta Members 38 posts 5,426 battles Report post #8 Posted January 16, 2016 Alright guys, I must confess something here. When you say DD, are you talking Destroyers? Like Sampson, in USA line? And you want me to use HE against other Cruisers and Destroyers? Is that what your saying? and AP for everything bigger? And just use torps for the close combat situtations?? 322 Xannari Members 1,360 posts Report post #13 Posted January 18, 2016 Can anyone tell me what Captain skills I should put on her? 1. Basic Firing Training. That extra round per minute is going to be invaluable [also I guess you give the anti-air gunners something other than a glock] 2a. I would recommend Expert Marksman, as you can turn your guns 180 degrees faster by roughly 5 seconds. 2b. You can get away with Torpedo Armament Expertise, as the torpedoes are by no means bad, but you should be using your guns more. 3a. High Alert. Your engine and rudder is going to be knocked out whether you like it or not, so you're going to want to fix those more often. 3b. If you want to pass this commander onto the heavy cruisers, I'd recommend Superintendent more because you'll want an extra charge on your defensive anti-air starting with Aoba. 4a. I would recommend Advanced Firing Training, as your range as a tier IV is below average, so you're going to want to fix that. 4b. If you're fine with having a relatively short range, Demolition Expert is to be used if you want to annoy the crap out of battleships if you don't already. 5. You're a big destroyer, and you don't want to lose your engines/rudders, or even be found in the first place. I would recommend more Preventative Maintenance to keep those gears intact, and I'm not sure how useful Concealment Expert would be, but have a go if you're curious. I've had pretty fair success playing my Tenryu like a destroyer, and I use the torps a lot. Followed up with gunfire. I noticed, though, that Kuma only has a two fish spread from each launcher, so I may need to adjust tactics some. Looking forward to it, as I love my Tenryu! 10 CriticalHit Members 122 posts 1,539 battles Report post #16 Posted January 26, 2016 Use HE pretty much exclusively on the Kuma, the fast rotating guns let you lay down a good stream of fire as you maneuver to avoid incoming fire. Torps are backup weapons only and focus on cleaning house of enemy DDs. It is absurdly easy to rack up 150-200 shell hits per match in this thing.

Well shoot, I screwed up my Kuma then. I have : 1: situation awareness 2: fire prevention So far, I'm still waiting to get my third point on him.. And my Tenryu captain is different too.. gawd no wonder I suck at this game. anyway of changing my selection? Ah, I think I found away, since I had two points on him already I just selected EM, and now i have skills on the two line. Weird but it works. Costly, but useful to erase rookie mistakes if you plan on moving your captain up. Or to change tack if you want to play your ship differently.

It appears my problem is that I have been driving her like a CL, when I really should be driving her like a DD. So, this I will start to do in order to see how it changes. No point in spending doubloons on a small fry like that. Question about all ships and captain skills, but especially about my Kuma. Early in my play experience, I just collected captain skills one by one in visual order, before I realized that picking and choosing captain skills was way more preferable. I have also been retaining captains and transferring them to my new ships as I got them and sold older ones. Are you actually saying that it might be to my advantage to retire a captain with a few captain skills under his belt, and opt for a fresh new captain starting from the ground up? Are there actually some captain skills that are not only NOT very helpful (for example, on the Kuma) but detrimental?
