New Mexico vs Cleveland

I was chasing a Cleveland cruiser in my New Mexico battleship and found that I was not able to hit the cruiser but the cruiser was pounding me and keeping at the "right" distance.

So I checked the details in the game: My ship could only hit at 13.6km (stock) with its 14" guns but the cruiser could hit me at 13.3km (stock) with its 6" guns. Presumably, the cruiser captain had some upgrade or captain skill to get the extra range, but on observation, the cruiser was beating my gun range by about 1km.

Now my Wikipedia search results contradict the ranges: 6" guns have a maximum range of 24km and 14" guns have a maximum range of 34km. That makes a lot more sense. Obviously the ranges have been scaled for gameplay, but they still need to be proportionate, therefore my New Mexico should always be able to outrange the cruiser.

You should probably get the ship upgraded. Firing range is determined by how far up on the mast the FCS is located using the horizon formula.

3 things.

1: You are chasing a cruiser. He can fire in front of you and you will sail into his rounds, so he can shoot shorter. You chasing him means you have to shoot ahead of him, which he is out of range and you can't because at your max in that situation your shells will fall short.

2: The Cleveland captain can have AFT, which boosts his range considerably.

3: Your New Mexico should not ALWAYS out range something just because you are in a Battleship or Wiki says something...

Equip Gun Fire Control Modification 1. It increases the range on the New Mexico's 14-inchers by 20%. On my New Mexico with the upgraded FCS module and Gun Fire Control Modification 1, I can shoot at targets at ranges of up to 17.7 km. With the spotter plane, that range extends to 20.5 km. Also, if the Cleveland you were facing was stock, then he may have had AFT equipped on his captain.

Even upgraded, you probably don't want to chase a Cleveland in a NM. A smart captain will just stay angled and keep lighting you on fire as he runs away.

so for now I am going to ignore that you want to chase a Cleveland in a New Mexico

there are captains skills(such as AFT) which will boost the range of the Cleveland's primary guns, because they are 152mm, and there are upgrades that can boost it further to about 15-16Km from memory(only up to Omaha in that line). It also has a rate of fire with its upgraded guns of 7.5rpm. Sadly this results in him reloading before his shells even land on you- making it a constant rate of fire.

A New Mexico with its top engine can do 21Kt at best- you are never going to be able to chase down a Clevelands 32.5Kt, plus its got a stock rudder shift of 9.3 seconds opposed to your 13.5 Seconds.

My advice as a New Mexico lover to another newbie to the New Mexico: Pick your targets, shoot the Cleveland only if the opportunity for a surprise presents itself, because if he knows your gunning for him, he will be able to avoid your shells. Shoot something else and put on a 30 degree angle to help stem the amount of damage he can do to you

If you were chasing it, it is possible that he just had to fire in front of you, and with the arc of the Cleveland's shells, by the time you traveled 1km, the shells would hit you. My Cleveland has a max range of 14.6km.

Never chase a Cleveland that tries to kite.

I've upgraded my NM, Colorado, and Fuso. Often it seems as if I'm eating Clevelands for breakfast, taking them out in a single volley. There are other times that the Cleveland torches my [edited]. Twice today this happened to me. I ultimately took them out, but was much weakened, quickly falling to other ships. Upgrade and keep your distance.

One of these two line diagrams depicts a smaller target.

Well a Battleship should always out range a cruiser, that is one thing I do agree with.

Thanks for that, it is exactly my point. Forget the nonsense like smaller target, upgrades and stuff, I have quoted stock equipment. Then somebody says well Wikipedia is "rubbish" in a manner or speaking. I would rather believe Wikipedia than a computer game hey :)

Doesn't matter if Wikipedia is correct, it's a game, more of an arcade game then a simulation.

Secondly, the max range isn't the effective range. Even if the 14 inch guns on the New Mex can shoot up to 34 km, no one in their right mind would actually try to engage a target at that range. The limitations are also imposed for gameplay purposes. It might not be "realistic" but again, gameplay.

As others have said, get your ship upgraded, issue solved.

you were assuming the Cleveland you were chasing was using stock equipment and that this game is a simulator.

now what do they say about those who assume?

In the game itself, if the cleveland is ahead of you he Can shoot with less range while you are chasing him due to him not having to aim as far, while you have to aim further.

Even if he is completely stock, his captain may have AFT which is a significant range boost to guns under 155mm in calibre(Cleveland uses 152mm).

Moral of the story- you can not go onto wikipedia and look at their accumulated information and then go into an arcade style game expecting exact same results.

The Clevs range with the proper captains skills is 17.6 km so a New Mexico is a easy target to stay in front and destroy and only with the spotter plain can you touch it.

Should never try to chase down a cruiser period.  Its a good way to get BBs isolated then pack-killed.

Absolutely the truth.

Honestly, given how slow the U.S. BBs are, your zone where he can't return fire is going to be covered rather rapidly if he wants to close.
