Which Cruiser Line Is Most Enjoyable?

I am an extremely casual player, so 'll probably be playing multiple lines at once. Having started Soviet DDs ( strange, I know but it's been really fun, and I usually do decent to pretty good, at least for now), I thought that a cruiser would be the most logical next step. As I won't be concentrating too much on one line, my priority is mid-tier performance, i.e. tiers 3-7/4-6. I've heard that USN has slightly better guns and AA, but IJN have torps and maneuverability, and that KM has good AP DMG and accuracy, but bad HE damage (worrying, as there would probably be quite a few BBs at these tiers). Can someone give me more specifics? Thanks.

German cruiser line is great, at tier 5. I love my Konigsberg. Probably the best ship in my fleet for just sheer enjoyment. Wickes is good too though, hard to decide.

Duno about the rest of it though.... (1-4 is bad, and I've not actually gotten around to purchasing the Nurnberg.)

If you want to kill all the things in the sky go full Murican!

Cruisers are probably the most varied class in WoWS.  Which line you will like depends on which aspect you want to maximize:

  • American CAs have very good anti-aircraft firepower, as well as lots of guns for chewing away at the enemy.
  • Japanese CAs typically have bigger, but fewer, guns in worse positioning.  But they switch to the "heavy cruiser" aspect earlier and thus tend to have better armor.  And those powerful IJN torpedoes.
  • German CAs tend to be fragile, but they have the longest-range guns with the best penetration.

Tier-wise, of the cruisers I've played, I think these are best:

  1. Erie - four single guns beats two twins, and you can upgrade them to 152mm.  But who stops here?
  2. Probably Dresden.  Those 105mm's may be small, but you get 12 of them.
  3. St. Louis all the way.
  4. Kuma.  A nice mix of guns and torpedoes.
  5. Omaha.  There's a reason there are three different versions of the Omaha in the game.  Although Konigsberg can make a pretty good argument.
  6. Cleveland.  Stupid frigging flamethrower plane-swatter secondaries-everywhere super-armored mini-citadel Cleveland that really should be tiered higher than it actually is.
  7. Probably Myoko.  I haven't played the Yorck yet, so it might be able to take the prize here.

Excluding premiums

With the Yorck now buffed, i would say KM is the better cruiser line at the higher tiers overall but not by much. The ships are pretty equal except Konigsberg is way better than Furutaka and Roon is better than Ibuki. Yorck was terrible but the buffs make her almost equal to Myoko and better than the Pensacola. Hipper and Mogami are pretty even and so are Aoba and Nurnberg.  Hindenberg vs Zao seems to be working out pretty even too though not many have reached Hindenberg yet.

The lack of HE doesn't really matter as AP will still can do 7k rolls on a Yamato

KM ships are slower on rudder response but get more range, faster turret,s and better RoF and AP. IJN has better maneuverability, HE, longer ranged torps (but worse firing arcs) and better concealment and AA

Mainly the Roon grind vs the Ibuki grind would put the KM slightly ahead for me as you will spend lots of games in those ships on the way to T10

The point is: both, German and US have crapat tier 7 and at the same time JAP got the wonderful Myoko

The IJN cruisers are enjoyable throughout, but the USN cruisers have some excellent mid-tier ships - specifically, the Omaha and the Cleveland.

Pensacola isn't that bad, but it requires a lot of aiming skill to do damage, position/orientation planning to not expose broadsides and some luck with enemy shell dispersion.

Yorck isn't terrible anymore, with those 8x 5rpm 210mm guns that actually turn at a reasonable rate, but the shell flight times are still pretty bad.

Myoko is still the best ship in T7, because WG never nerfed the specs on her, from when she was a T8. Okay, so that's not entirely true, WG did slightly nerf Myoko, but she's still amazing.

I have all three and they're all about equal but require different play styles.

I'm tier 10 in USN, tier 8 in IJN, and tier 6 in KM.

IJN all the way.

I played it even when Furutaka was awful, and it still wasn't that bad.

Kuma and Aoba are amazingly fun ships.  Myoko is like Pensacola, except better in almost every regard.  There's absolutely no comparison between New Orleans and Mogami (hint: Mogami is better) and while Ibuki doesn't have a great reputation, it's not the tier-for-tier worst ship in the game, like Baltimore

German ships are... I dunno.  I enjoy the Konigsberg even now, and the Nurnberg is pretty good, but I've seen videos and stats of the rest of the line and I'm not thrilled.  Glass cannon doesn't seem to be my style of play.

I have never had a bad game with the Japanese cruiser line. On the other hand, the Cleveland is junk. Hopping the Pensacola with its proper sized guns will be better.

US cruiser fun stops at the Cleveland

I just got to the Baltimore, it's a piece of crap.

I have a Baltimore and it's a dang monster. Maybe this is just a case of you being really bad at this game.

Thats nice that you do well in the Balty, but she is statistically one of the worst in tier ship in the game. Maybe you shouldn't be so Douchy....

Up to tier three, I'd say the USN line is most fun.

After that, dunno.  My T IV Phoenix is so spotty and inconsistant, that it's absolutely no fun for me to play.   It's now a museum piece, rusting away in my port.  I doubt I'll bother with the US line any longer.

IJN is pretty fun.  I had a blast with my Chikuma- in spite of all the hate directed at it.  The Tenryu is a good little ship, too.   I stopped grinding here- the lack of T III players meant I was always, always uptiered, and was getting eaten alive.  Mostly due to the fact that this is more destroyer then cruiser, and my DD Skills are most definitely NOT worthy of tier 4 and 5 matches.     I'll keep going eventually, but the uber popularity of DD's right now at lower tiers means I switched to BB for self preservation.  Looking forward to the Kuma and those above it.

I don't know as much about the German line.  The Dresden was a looonnngg grind for me, due to the low powered guns- and the Kolberg has the same ones.  Lots of others like them, though.  They seem to get a much needed boost in firepower after that.

German line from 2-4 isnt too much fun, but from there on you get great guns and decent torps.

U.S. line is good up to the Cleveland. the shell arcs are hard to get used to. I stopped at the Cleveland when I saw that the armour and ROF on the Pensacola was worse.

IJN is pretty good with decent torps and ok turrets, the Kuma is great, I hated the Furutaka, and sold my Aoba once the German line was avaible. I have Played the Myoko and Mogami. Myoko is probably the best T7, I found the Mogami has great guns but weak citadel, Thats as far as I got there

The only Russian cruiser I have played (besides the Orlan) is the Mikhal Kutuzov. I found it lacking for its tier so I can give an opinion on the Russian line.

I would say IJN and KM ships are pretty equal. My biggest issue is that from T7-9 in IJN you are essentially using the same ship so while at T7 you are OP as hell by T9 you are is a pretty crappy place. Not to mention using what are basically the same ship for three tiers in a row gets old fast. The Roon absolutely dominates T9.

T5 USN - Omaha is good!

T3 USN - St Louis is GREAT!!!!!!

T5 German - Koenigsburg is good.

Cleveland sucks, has it guns Blown off all the time, has no range, and the whole flame thrower thing is a myth.  It can set fires but RNG is too fickle to count on fires when you need them most.  Some games I set 11 fires and some I get lucky to set 2.  Too hit miss for it to be called a flamethrower.

Avoid the Nuremberg at all cost, it is so soft a T4 DD can get a citadel on you.

Nurnberg is one of the best ships in the game. It can melt most other cruisers that it meets with its rapid fire guns except for the Cleveland, and thats because the Cleveland has almost double the armour and 7000 more health. Armour is thin so dont go broadside, especially against a BB or the Cleveland, unless you are going for damage and really want to take out the target (if the target is a BB or Cleveland your probably wont kill it).

It also has more guns that shoot further and are in a much better layout.
