Best high tier brawling BB?

I have been playing up the US BB line, because I like to get in close and brawl with BBs. But I know that they change after tier VIII, although I have only messed with them on the public test. I recently got the Colorado and played Nagato during CBT, and a few games in Izumo. I also have a Derpitz. My question is, aside from Tirpitz, whats the best option for a brawling playstyle past tier VII? Or should I just stop there?

Yamato without question.

The issue is at the moment that everyone sees one and focuses fire on it.  Even Yamato can't stand up to bombardment and torpedo attack by 12 ships simultaneously.

If you mean by brawling close range then it is Tirpitz hands down.

If I see a Yamato near while in my Tirpitz and I have most of my health I will charge. The Yamato's guns can't traverse fast enough at close range to get a lock. Then the yammy gets a full load of torps.

If it is medium to long range then nothing beats the Yamato.

At tier 7, Nagato is quite good. Tier 6, I'd say Fuso. From what I saw in the test server, Amagi was not too bad either. I quite enjoyed Amagi on the test server and I actually liked Izumo as well.

The (assumingly) best brawlers aren't in the game yet. Germany, UK, and possibly mid & late tier RU/USSR BBs, aka Atlantic battleships.

For those curious on how Pacific and Atlantic battleships differentiate: http://forum.worldofwarships.com/index.php?/topic/2147-an-example-of-pacific-vs-atlantic-battleship-construction/

If you like to brawl in BBs then pray they sell the Imperator Nikolai again and buy it up immediately!!!.   Sailed properly you can bounce a T6 BBs while citadelling everything in site.  The thing eats BBs and has cruisers for a snack.

I guess im not surorised but no one suggested a US BB past Yolorado. I appreciate the replies and I did get a Nikolai. :)

The sad thing is that the stats for Izumo suggest that it should be a brawler. Bad deck armor that encourages you to get in close to avoid plunging fire, decent speed to close the distance, good secondaries (if any secondaries can be considered good), fast rotating main battery. Too bad it doesnt work so well in practice, although maybe when I reach her I will figure it out when grinding for Yammy.

Nagato, in my opinion, is probably the best 'jack of all trades' battleship, with good guns, armor, and speed. She can fight at range or up close, and even when specialized for one or the other, is still capable in any role.

I always figured Amagi would be better at range but once I get her I will see what she can do up close.

Nice post about the differences in US and UK battleship design.

While this hasnt narrowed it down to any one ship it has ruled out spending time on NC, Iowa, and Montana for now.

Thank you all for the replies.

Warspite has been very fun for me and its a brawler.

7.2km secondaries is golden, especially vs those pesky DD who think they can sneak up.

engaged several tirpitz in 1v1s and it could compete as long as you dodged the torps XD

Just 2cents worth

I little while back, I got a 2v2 match(ya, crazy).  My Ibuki and a Montana vs a Yamato and Atago on the open ocean map.

When we found each other, the Montana first hit the Atago before it was in my range then I quickly finished it off with guns.  The Yamato, took 70% of my HPs in one shot and I only got a couple of hits before it finished me.  At this point the both BBs had about the same HPs left when they brawled.  The Montana won pretty easily.  Yes, lots of factors involved but this was as close to a true 1v1 that I've seen. I think the Montana is pretty tough too.

Yamato with the exception against Tirpitz as that is one ship you obviously don't want getting too close. I would actually say Tirpitz is a better brawler for its tier. The yamato actually has it bad at extremely close ranges. The guns can't traverse fast enough to keep up with anything and there is a dead zone on one of its front guns at around 2.5km if the target is directly ahead of you. If you fail to kill your target by the time each ship is passing eachother at close range it is very likely you make lose. This has happened before against Montana's because his guns could keep up at those ranges where mine would not. The solution to this is don't get into a turning battle unless you know that your next salvo will get off on target before your opponents.

You will not be be brawling at high tiers unless you want to die early or happen to get a once in 100 battles no DD game.

Totally agree on this one.

On the topic, Colorado and Tirpitz for their tier.

Sadly brawls almost never seem to happen in high tiers. Part of the reason I think high tier gameplay is worse than lower tiers.

In theory Montana should be a great brawler with armor and 12 guns but she seems dreadfully under-powered compared to the "highly fetishized" Yamato.

Warspite isn't high tier, but it can out-brawl any other BB T6 or lower. It's secondaries are brutal and it has good armor and health and 15" guns. But it also has good ability to repair and its turning radius is 550 compared to the next best, New Mexico, at 640 and rudder shift is 14.2 base compared to next best, Fuso, at 17.1. It's also faster than them. The only thing is its turrets turn slow as poop and it has less of them. But that only will matter for broadsides.

Regardless of tiers, my best brawlers (the ones I have) are (in order - IMO):

  1. Colorado
  2. Tirpitz
  3. Imp. Nikolai I
  4. Warspite
  5. New Mexico
  6. New York
