1 Steveied123 Members 27 posts 191 battles Report post #1 Posted January 7, 2016 I have been doing pretty well with my damage and killing off any injured ships. However, playing the daily missions, I have a really hard time keeping myself alive. My defense is really not very good. In surfing around my account I found one defense rating of 0.61… That can't be good. I think I may be getting hung up in the binoculars view and not watching what's going on around me. Any defense tips you could provide would be very helpful. I'm wondering how often experienced players stay in the binoculars view while in battle? (PS: I really love following experienced aggressive players around the board after my ship has been sunk… Yet I would rather sink a few more of the enemy myself.) Situational awareness is absolute key in keeping alive, which is both your location on the map in relation to your team and your team's relation (including yourself) to the enemy. It's something that takes some time to get used to, and even experienced players will have lapses at times.

You have to be attentive to the mini-map and the surroundings. Plan your moves ahead and use terrain to advantage. See that BB coming into view? Then plan to shoot and immediately turn into island cover. This works for cruisers very well. Know the reload times and the use of guns/torps by the enemy. Time your turns to BBs when they just shot and have a 30 second reload. Are you fighting an IJN DD? Did he just launch? Now you know you have x number of seconds before they can shoot again so all they can do is run and hide from you. Do not chase them blindly into the open, i.e. don't overextend. Try to stay near your friends, maybe just slightly ahead for backup. Voulezvouz TV has a great YouTubeT channel where he shows these techniques and one I hadn't seen before: the use of RMB while shooting without zoom view. He shows it in several videos. Basically, set your lead, do a shot, confirm the lead is correct, or adjust, then RMB to look around what's going on, while you keep shooting from wide view. Surprisingly it works and the lead stays the same under the same conditions. Check out his videos. It helped me.
1 Steveied123 Members 27 posts 191 battles Report post #6 Posted January 7, 2016 WOW(s)! Great information! I watched a couple of Voulezvouz videos and at this point have just jotted notes on everybody's input and will practice, practice, practice Every night. I realized yesterday that I was being way too aggressive… When the battle started I set my Cruisers throttle to full and rarely adjusted it. In watching the video after I was sunk I saw how the most Experienced players tended to hang back and position themselves properly for their own protection as well as protection of the team. I plan to remain aggressive but, as you guys have taught me, only in a worthwhile effort. The RMB button will be an incredible help once I get used to using it. Developing situational awareness is almost like creating a whole new lifestyle. Using the terrain for protection and ambush is very wise and seems simple but I think requires a lot awareness to achieve. My stroke took away half the use of my left hand so I have a little difficulty with keyboard strokes on the fly but as I am homebound I have plenty of hours to learn. I will begin practicing tonight after I finish the videos and play co-op games until I feel proficient enough to go back to the daily missions. Thank you all for your help and I'll update here when I can actually complete a daily mission without dying in the first minute.
