German Cruiser Line

Hey everyone, I'm currently trying to grind the German cruiser line with my highest tier at VI. I don't mind the playstyle, I'm naturally aggressive but the games where I force myself to play strategically I do well and really enjoy the payoff at the end. However I see a lot of talk about how the German Cruisers are under powered/suck at higher tiers. So is the hate because they play the same as the 5 and 6 tiers or do they really suck? If it is just a matter of play style I think I'll grind it out, but if they lose power relative to other ships I think I'll just go play US.

Well the tier 7 did suck but is now much better. The tier 8 is also very good once you upgrade it. Can not speak to 9 or 10 yet.

To me, they're not underpowered.  They're under-armored.  Yes their HE damage sucks booty butt, however, their AP damage is pretty good.  Also, I always follow   another cruiser or I stick with a BB and use him like a shield.  I take advantage of the german firing range and firing rate.

Where is this supposed talk that the whole line is underpowered? The tier 7 is 'meh', but the 8, 9 and 10 are great. Candidates for best in tier, especially the 9.

Well I'm used to the non-existent armor. Thats made me a beast at my swerve game.  Its weird cause I always seem to do better with HE than AP but maybe thats just the lower tiers?

Their guns WAY out-perform their armor, as evildrtran stated.  It makes them difficult to play. Im currently playing the Nurnberg (slowly) and it is particularly vulnerable to even lower tier BBs, specifically the NY and even the Wyoming.  A 12 gun salvo from either of these ships will find youeventually, and if they do, there is a very high chance you will be citadeled, regardless of angling. Not a problem i had with either the cleveland or aoba.

Well, it is called the Cheatland for a reason. The German line is a mix of IJN citadels, and USN armor - of two tiers previous.

The Yorck is hard to get used to after the Nurnberg,  The Hipper Roon and Hindenberg are great citadel machines that chew up all other cruisers one on one  play through the Yorck to get used to the different style and you will be fine

The German cruiser line has the best combined tiers 8-9-10 of any cruiser line (arguably, any ship line) in the game.  They may not be user-friendly to people that think "cruiser play" is synonymous with "spam HE", but for people that can make the most of the powerful AP rounds, only the Zao really compares.

I do extremely well with the Konig. Nurn not so well. My secret is maneuver a lot and use long range shots of 14+ km. Close quarters under 10k or alone and forget it you will get pounded quickly. Its not a bull, you can't charge in with them. Cat and mouse at range, hang with BB's or other stout cruisers. You can't trade  punches with IJN, USN cruisers of the same tier....or even a tier below. They are a long range sniper, Accurate and fast ROF.

A tactic I use is run in get a bunch of fast broadside slavos off, when detected and fire is returned my [edited]is already towards them and using the two rear turrets. Repeat this throughout the game and now I usually live through a game...few kills but lots of damage and it annoys BB's to no end. And is devastating to lower tiers like the st louis, kolberg etc, which you get matched against frequently.

The Konig is VERY effective against DD's at 10km. You can put all three turrets on them fast and still maneuver.

Use torps to push your target into your guns or to a more favorable position.

The Konigsberg takes a lot of practice but can be a very effective team ship. They are delicate, but the guns are long and accurate.

I do much better with HE also, especially on BB's or heavy cruisers. I find myself switching rounds frequently.

Generally, on my Konig, AP the crap out of anything that dares to show their broadside. I will use HE, however, when shooting at extremely long ranges to ships coming bow-first, DDs if I dont forget to swap from AP, and the heavily armored NY, NM or Wyoming.

What are you guys using for Captain skills? I'm on my Hipper (love it) and im not sure which tier 4 skill to get. I was thinking the extra consumables since the Roon as repair ability. Any ideas?

sooo.. the real question is when are the real German Cruisers coming.   What I mean is,  where is Admiral Sheer and Graf Spee?  They were built before the Admiral Hipper and Prinz Eugene with 11inch Cannons on a cruiser. They were not BB's nor should they be confused as such

It just seems that most of the line is pre-1930's with the exception of Tier 8.   What is the story?

Problem with the Sheer and Graff Spee is although they had big guns they had crap armour and were slow  compared to the big cruisers of the era. So if you stick them with the cruiser line you will have a ship that can hit hard but cant move to fight DDs, if you stick it with the BB line you have a battlecruiser that has no armour and its guns are below average so where would it be placed on the tech tree?

Based on what little experience I have so far with WG and WoWS, I tend to think that Scheer/Spee will probably show up as a premium cruiser in the T7/T8 zone.

At least I like to think so.

I have enjoyed the German cruiser line game play up to T6 so far and plan on reaching T8 for the Admiral Hipper.  I like the accuracy at range while avoiding return fire or surprise engagements.

From the scuttlebutt I've read, KM ship lines should be coming in August?

If WG ever offers the Tirpitz again, I'll be jumping on it no matter the cost.
