How does it work for accumulating points toward training your captain?

Is it cumulative total for the XP the ship has acquired? or is based on the amount the ship is carrying?

IOW, what exactly is it that generates the points used to designate the skill level of the captain?

Experience as you earn it in a ship ( or ships if you switch the commander between a regular ship and a premium ) goes toward the amount built up for  the next skill point . How much a commander needs to get to the next point and how much you have at the time , will show if you hover the cursor over the commander in port or by clicking on him to bring up the skill tree just under his name .

Really like your avatar man: Imperial German Eagle. I wish they would put the German Imperial Naval Ensign on the ships that are from the Kaiser Reich period: like Emden, Dresden, etc.  

 

They do use the Imperial Russian Naval Ensign for Aurora and Diana.

You can swap as many times as you like.  You can choose to pay doubloons for the full retrain or take the free and credits option, but that means he'll be at 50% efficiency in his skills until he is retrained. 

This does not apply for premium ships though.. any captain of the same nation can be placed in a premium and the skills will be fully effective.

I googled the Andermani Navy. Now, I feel foolish. I thought the eagle you use was in tribute to the Imperial German Navy of the Kaiser Reich. I still like the avatar.

I wonder if the Andermani leadership recognizes their eagle's semblance to Imperial German, Prussian Eagle.
