At this point I'm pretty deep in that rabbit hole we like to call IJN DD. Not too far down the USN line yet but sometimes I must admit I do get stealth fire envy from time to time but I just got the Polish DD over the weekend and she's a lot of fun. Not sure what her concealment penalty for gunfire is but it feels like 3.8 km just like the other 120 mm guns so even without any captain skills she's already got .7 km lane for stealth fire... and I've been edging her range like a porn star.

 

That said, I'm going to have to pay attention over the next little while to note how many times having Last Stand has actually saved my butt.

 

I've gotten better at keeping myself hidden now and don't get caught off guard by other DD as often anymore. CVs don't bother me as often as they used to either and for the most part I can choose when to let myself become detected. In those games where you find yourself being chased by three CAs, you're pretty much dead anyway since you have three sets of gang banging you. That's really when I notice it doing its thing... when I'm surrounded and dead anyway. All it does is hopefully let me get in one last torpedo launch.

 

Again, I'm going to have to pay close attention to when it kicks in. I'm pretty quick with the smoke but I do have to work on not hitting R right away and letting myself drift into where I need to go.

 

On the other hand, what I have been noticing happening more often is that my guns seem to always be that last 100m short whenever my team manages to get the other fleet running away. It would be nice to be able to set a few fires after all that hard work of turning ships around. Fires are nice.

Last Stand to me is pretty much a necessity in the IJN and USN DDs. If you decide not to, then you have got to run premium repair. I've been experimenting with this in the Fletcher, running Demo Expert and premium repair and it works well. A mere 40 second cooldown is sufficient 99% of the time. IJN DDs should run last stand regardless, because they use their guns so infrequently. 

 

On the Blyskawica, its Demo Expert all the way. 11% fire chance is outrageously awesome, and once you get the concealment at level 5 Captains skill, you'll be a stealthy fire breathing monster.

For the Blyskawica, you want Advanced Firing Training, not Last Stand.

 

14.4 km firing range with 7.5 km detectability.  Add the 4km when firing, you get 11.5 km detectability, with 14.4 km firing.  Yum.

 

Getting Concealment Expert at 5 pts only gets you down to 6.7 km, which isn't bad for fighting other DDs, but your speed gets you there anyway.  I'm at 10 pts, with AFT, and planning on spreading the other points around on things like Basic Firing Training (faster guns), Vigilance (detect evil torps sooner)

IJN DDs should run last stand regardless, because they use their guns so infrequently.

dont.  Last stand has saved me many more than a handful of times when running the hell away from something.  A dd thats dead in the water is just dead.

yup, I am debating whether doing DE for USDD was right decision.  I've been ok with it,  I've been too cheap to run premium  repair and has bitten me couple times.

it saves you from having to burn a repair on your engine for something like... fire which also boosts your detectability range.

I'm willing to play guinea pig here. :3

 

I've been considering AFT instead of Last Stand ever since Mutsuki since in that ship you were dead whether you had Last Stand or not if you got spotted. Trying to train myself to be able to choose when I get spotted. Getting better at it so if that's going to be the case, Last Stand is seldom going to be activated whereas I'm always trying to sneak my guns in near endgame time. Fire is good... especially if flooding gets repaired.

 

Will log whenever Last Stand kicks in though... will be useful to determine how often it actually saves your but. Running premium so it only takes a cap, a couple torp hits, and a dozen HE hits to break even.

on my bucky, I wish i had faster turret and guns.  range is not so big a deal.  been tempted to use my  points.    ( guess I could reset after 5 point and use the point now)

i use the guns defensively.  and when I need it, I wish it was bit more handy.  slow turret is one big issue, as I have to wait till it catches up with dodging.      it is pretty much damn if you do, damn if you don't situation

I always use last stand because I found that the amount of times I was dying just because I could not maneuver was unacceptable. It's one of those things where you never realize how effective it is until you try it the other way.

I switched my kiev to adv fire to see if those guns can give me the edge. The detect is so bad that I wan the extra invisi range but it is a fragile boat so I wouldn't be surprised if I switch back.

Last stand has activated in about 1/4 of my games over the last couple days. Each time I made sure I let it run its course without hitting repair. The speed penalty hasn't affected me that much either... but also I haven't needed to hit repair after that first hit either.... Still considering dropping doubloon to experiment with it but I think we need to play with it a bit more.

Will have to pay attention now to the endgame where I do use my guns aggressively to start fires after flooding has been repaired.

I use last stand on my IJN & US DDs. The number of times I've been just been inside detection range, have taken relatively minor damage, but had modules knocked out twice in a row after repairing has been quite high.

And then had to sit there while the engine repairs or steam in a circle really has left me open to being obliterated. With Last stand I can mostly limp away too fight another day.

 

As Sir_godz said you don't notice it until its gone, or start a new captain and find yourself a sitting duck.

Last Stand is essential for IJNs, but hey, give it some tests.. I did :).   I also use Last Stand on all US DDs, except Nicholas (I use A-Hull with AFT on a Nicholas where the shell flight time is almost identical to a Tier 7 Bly).

at least with benson and mahan, I think LS is better than DE.   I may have to do a reset.   I really still don't set enough fire with DE, so no real point in it.

Okay so I've been paying more attention to when I use my guns.

 

1) End game when it's time to get into gun duels with BBs and you need to start fires to keep the DPS up after flooding has been repaired.

2) When enemy DD spots me in no man's land and killing it means you go invisible again because its cover fire is more than 10km away.

 

Last stand has saved my [edited]though but not as often as you would think. It does kick in all the time but it's more useful early game when you have a fleet of CAs to disappear into. Late game, if it kicks in then you're probably against a CA with planes and sonar. No amount of smoke, engine boost, or LS will save you from that. Your only hope is a lucky torpedo hit or a cit from your cover fire. You might as well go all out with HE at that point to sneak some fires in before you die.
