Russian DD help

Hi guys, I'm looking for some advice on the Russian DDs.  Currently I'm using the Gnevny and I don't know why but I have some fun with these Russian DDs.  I don't play well with them, don't get many kills, never get torpedo hits, and never survive more than a couple battles with them..  It gets frustrating sometimes, pretty much just spot for my team and lay screens.  Can anyone offer some advice or strategies they have found with the Russian DDs that seem to work well?

I have found that youtube videos have a lot of useful information about how to play USN and IJN DDs.

I'll bet there are some that could help with Russian as well.

IIRC, Russian DDs are difficult to play owing to their very limited torpedo range; but, I do think they have good guns. Maybe if you play USN DDs first and get the hang of those, you will find Russian DDs easier to play.

Just my 0.02USD.

I am at tier 8 (Tashkent) on the Russian DD line. They are basically gun boats/light cruisers. Torpedo is only a bonus tool for fun and ambush around islands until Tier 8. Don't think you have to use them. My advice I set them up like Cruisers. You can outgun IJN and USN DDs.

I usually at the beginning of a match hunt DDs (russian are prioritiy), and then use my range to fire at boats that are usually engaged with something else. You will be amaze to realize how many people ignore you when they engage other targets. As well I can add that I have 2 Russian premium ship that I use to train the commander especially when I buy I new ship as refuse to pay gold to have the commander at 100% so I pay credits to get it at 50% and use the premiums until back to 100%. Situation awareness does not work until 100% is back on.

I focus on gun effectiveness in the setup

As equipment I use :

Main Battery Mod 1

Gun Fire control Mod 1

Propulsion Mod1

Steering Gear mod 2

Concealment System mod1

As for my Comander/Admiral:

Situation awareness

Basic firing training (increase DPM -» gun boat) I know it is a 2nd line 1 perk but it is effective for this setup.

Expert Marksman (since turret rotation is so so on DD line)

Superintendant

Advance firing training (increase you range by 20% and all boat from Tier 5 have 130mm guns)

Concealment expert (working on it)

Hope this helps. Do not forget if you are hunting DDs (IJN&USN) they will spot you before you see them.

Learn your stealth. Know what your stealth is with camouflage. Know what your stealth is if you fire (+4 km... there is a graph somewhere.) You should turn off AA to protect stealth. Hide behind islands/rocks. You should communicate and make sure your teammates can support you, Remember that you are the 'eyes' of your fleet. Press smoke charge to "hide" your teammates. Learn about INVISIFIRE. Captain skills especially AFT, ship modules also.

They are gunboats that work like light cruisers (with the concealment to match).

Unlike USN DDs - also gunboats, but with big arc at distance - RU DDs have flatter trajectory so they work well at range. With USN DDs you need to get closer to reliably hit a DD.

Forget they have torpedoes, a secondary weapon of opportunity at best.

Gnevny's main issue to me is the slow turret rotation, so knife fighting does not work well. Ognevoi's main issue to me is the 2x2 layout so when a turret is knocked out (and it will), you lose 50% of your firepower. Kiev is the one I like, even though it was recently nerfed. Can comment on higher as Kiev is my current\.

At tier 5 and beyond, your torpedoes will mostly be the fast, short-range, unavoidable ambush/torpcharge type.  You'll get some longer range (and lose some speed) at tiers 9 and 10, but before then you won't have the ability to use torpedoes from open-water stealth.  In the 5-8 ships, staying near full health with those fast torpedoes makes you a threat to any ship in the late game.  You can have great games using only guns, but knowing how/when to use your torpedoes can push you over the hill from "good" to "great".

The accuracy and rate of fire are good enough that the weak HE is still useful for getting damage against angled targets and starting fires, but you'll usually want to use AP shells, which will net salvos of 2-5k damage against a good flat superstructure (or more against a close cruiser's citadel).  Use your smoke both defensively and offensively, to sit down and pour damage into a distracted target that's giving you good shots.  I typically spend the first ~5 minutes trying to hunt and kill enemy destroyers before either going for caps or helping kill larger ships.

Russian DDs are pretty straight forward to play. Since you torpedoes have terrible range you will only use them if you are either going to ambush someone coming around an island or make a suicide run. Most of the time you will just be using your guns. In all Russian DDs from T4 up make sure you pick the T2 captain skill to buff turret rotation over torp reload speed that you would take playing USN/IJN. Next, when using the Gnevny in a fight, try to use the Q & E keys to make half rudder movements. If you use A & D or otherwise command full rudder, the Gnevny's turrets will rotate slower than the ship is turning and make you unable to sustain fire. If you are not using offensive smoke to fire, then you should try to engage targets that are distracted. As Mesrith said, the 130mm AP on these boats is really good and will chew up targets if you know where to aim. Lastly, if you are going to be firing in the open, try to keep your distance to about 10km or more from enemy contacts. (Inside 10 km players tend to have an easier time landing hits on DDs.)

I made this review not long ago. I know you are past tier IV but some of the same things may apply to the higher tiers.
