Anyone play at a high level and have some tips for doing divisions?   In Tanks I know we'd typically all pick the same basic type of tank so that we'd naturally be drawn to the same location on the map to support each other.   That's something that doesn't seem to be a factor as much in Ships and having a cruiser and a DD together can sometimes seem better because they can support each other in different ways.

Just looking for some input from people who run stuff together and win a lot.  57% when in 3 player divisions and 61% in 2 player but more is merrier of course when it comes to wins.

well, I div regularly with a buddy of mine most nights... and sometime we pick the same ship.. BB or Cruiser (he doesn't play DDs yet) and we do ok.. most times however I pick a ship to compliment his choice.. he doesn't have nearly as many ships as I have and he started late so his limit is tier 5 or 6... when he plays a BB I play a DD or cruiser. when he plays a cruiser I play a DD or BB.. we stick together and grab a ship or two more from the team and usually do very well... I think it best to pick ships to compliment your div mate(s) to help in escort or defense whether it be against Planes or other ships...

If you don't know the persons abilities or play style it hardly matters. Frankly it's only if they are good enough to know the tactics that ship that different ship type matters. If it's all unknown the the same ship type is better. At least you will be able to keep up with each other.

The roles of ships in this game are such that as a team you can do wonders if each knows what to do but if any member of your platoon doesn't really know what their job is then it's pointless.

I don't bother with platoons for this reason. A teammate that doesn't know how to compliment team play might as well be AFK a lot of the time. At least then you would know that no hlep will be coming rather than relying on it and dying because it is not there.

Because this game moves so slow literally, there is no shrub to hide behind and take a breather. It's a lot more like figure skating where momentum and orchestrated maneuvers make all the difference. So platooning is questionable. Look into clans or learn to be amazing and carry your team at least 65% of the time, or pray for serenity now.

Yeah, that's why I mentioned that we'd been doing it for a while and winning quite a few games.   We all know our roles and what we're good at and such - that part is behind us and it's the same 2/3 people for 95% of my group play.   Sometimes though in two DDs  you wish the other guy had a little more firepower against some targets, or when doing a DD/CA you wish the other guy was also a DD so he could speed run with you towards cap or something.   I wasn't sure if there was any established group tactics that people preferred.

Dunno what you mean by "play at a high level" but you should generally be able to support each other effectively. A battleship, cruiser, and destroyer or carrier is usually a pretty good combo depending on the players. My divisions usually end up with two battleships and a cruiser for maximum killing power.

When we division we generally just stick together and we pick ships that compliment each other if we can.

I will tell you that there are some games where no one can save you from a potato team no matter how well you play. We actually had a game today where we were saved by a Carrier being the only competent one on the team outside of the 3 of us. We had 6 kills between the 3 of us, and he got another 4, which won us the game. The rest of the team was pretty embarrassing the whole game, and there's not much you can do it overcome that sometimes.

I division with the same buddy of mine so often that we've developed an almost implicit understanding of each other's playstyle. We use voice comms to coordinate, alert each other to incoming threats and b#tch about the team :)

When playing anything between tier 6 and 10, we tend to take ships that work well together but aren't of the same type. Usually a CA and a BB, sometimes a BB and a DD. The idea is that if we choose to stick together in a given situation, we can fend off a greater variety of enemies and tank for each other as appropriate. A division of two ships of the same type, unless they are DDs, runs the risk of being too inflexible and reliant on team support (which we all know how that goes).

Some combos tend to work better than others because we're more comfortable with particular ships. IMHO it's always better to run something you enjoy even if it contradicts the idea of using complementary ships.

More wins! :)

Consensus seems to be ships of differing roles instead of all BB or whatever.  Thanks, that's what I was looking for.
