What am I missing?

I had a blast playing this up through Tier 4. Tier 5 was okay, but now at Tier 6 (seeing Tier 8 matches, of course), I'm just not enjoying this.

 

Every single game is either a) all the cruisers and destroyers rush into a cluster of BBs, or more often, b) every single ship but one or two sits back and tries to snipe each other to death at 18km +. I can't hit a damned thing at that range, and it just feels like a bunch of arty in tanks trying to get lucky.

 

It's just no fun. I love being aggressive (it's my biggest problem, too), but with teams of campers, there is absolutely no way I've found to be effective except to hide and hope my BBs are better shots than theirs until we've either mopped the floor and I can hope for a few points of damage or they've mopped US up and I'm dead regardless.

 

What am I missing?

What class are you playing?  If you're a cruiser driver, you really are at the mercy of your BB's in terms of how aggresive you can be.  I suggest you learn how to BB and be shocked at how many people follow you when you're aggressive in it.  American BB's are especially well suited to aggressive gameplay.

Game play changes radically once you get to tier 5 and up.  Ships generally sail to a position then shoot from "firing lines" anywhere from 10 to 18 km.  Any closer and you get nuked by accurate bb fire or get burned by 3 or more CAs.

Glad to know it's not just me, at least....

 

I'm playing American CAs (up to Cleveland) and DDs (up to Nicholas). I've tried Wyoming for several games, but it hasn't been my favorite. 

 

I'll spend some more time in the BB lines and see if they end up fitting a bit better.

It's true if you have an aggressive bb player on your team ppl will follow and protect him. I do it all the time in my nikolia an that thing is designed for kicking butt an taking names. Ppl just need a leader some times tho their are those that just don't care so you'll figure it out as it goes

Pretty much what others have said. CAs are great at many things, but leading a charge isn't one of them.

 

USN DDs also lack stealth torping ability, meaning they can't do much until the initial battle lines break (unless islands).

 

Have you considered trying out IJN DDs? They're very sneaky, and have the ability to torpedo enemies from stealth. Because of this you can take to the attack from the very start. Of course you have to beware other DDs, and the return fire if you're spotted, but play style wise you should like them up to Mutsuki.

I think this may be my next path, actually. I don't have the aim yet to make BBs work, but I do like the IJN dds up to the Iso, anyway. The more I read, the more I realize cruisers, especially at higher tiers, HAVE to remain in support roles. I like pushing the fight, so I'll do it from stealth with IJN and work on my aim for BBs.

Also BB accuracy increases significantly at T6 as well.  It's a combination of gun dispersion decreasing, players getting more experienced at shooting, and learning to kill cruisers rather than pound on other BBs for xp/credits/wins.

 

This makes cruiser life harder as your mistakes are more likely to be punished.
