played it in the test server to see all the hype about the hind...OMG I loved it... just got the Hipper so I have a way to go, but it and the Hind were just simply amazing cruisers to play.. fragile as they are, those dam guns..... just awesome ships....

Roon is an excellent ship.

 

Outstanding guns - fast flat trajectory, excellent ROF, accurate, tight shell dispersion, and very powerful AP.

Roon's AP can regularly do 5k+ damage per salvo at distance on BBs that aren't angled sharply (including Yamato). It's hard not to land a couple cit hits every match on enemy cruisers, especially IJN cruisers. I love going up against a Mogami, Atago, Ibuki, or Zao in the Roon cause you know you're going to cit them if they don't point their bow right at you. DDs are quite easy to kill (once spotted that is) thanks to the Roon's fast flat trajectory.

Torps are short range but can be fired at steep angles so you don't have to maneuver much to use them.

 

The Roon's shortcomings (first 2 are the case with all German cruiser):

*If the enemy points its bow at you, the Roon's amazing guns are no longer so amazing. Its superior AP is virtually useless in this scenario. I have managed on occasion to cause significant damage with AP with salvos placed just above the enemy's bow (hitting the base of their superstructure) but the returns for these shots are quite random/inconsistent and therefore using AP in this scenario is too unreliable/risky. Best option is to switch to HE which is notoriously *mediocre* for German cruisers (but still has a decent chance of starting a fire) or pick another target if you can.

*Weak armor makes the Roon one of the favorite targets for BBs. Maneuver constantly and always angle. HP total is great though so that helps.

*Pretty mediocre maneuverability. I upgraded the rudder shift which has helped significantly but it's still quite difficult to dodge torps.

*Lousy detection and concealment.

*Pretty mediocre AA

 

In a nutshell, Roon's main guns and AP are so good that it's still an excellent ship despite having the shortcomings listed above.

Just earned mine.  Have only upgraded the guns, but can already tell it's superior to the Hipper, which I was hit and miss with.  The guns are outstanding and I can't wait for the hull upgrade and range boost.  What a fun ship.

I trash them consistently in my Ibuki and Hipper...not a fan of the "all in da rear" arrangement.

I'm not either, didn't like it with the Nurnmberg and still not a fan of it now with my Roon. Leaves my broadside too exposed to just barely get the rear turrets aligned for a shot, before frantically putting the rudder full to port/starboard, hoping those 9, 16inch shells aren't already headed my way lol.
