Maybe this has been done to death but I would like to farm some members experience.  I have been playing with the 155 mm guns and feel they do a very good job.  Some YouTube reviews say this is the gun to go with.  On damage per minute the 155's do much better:

155 = 2,600 HE X 6.7 RPM = 17,420 damage per gun X 15 guns = 261,300 damage per minute

          3,300 AP X 6.7 RPM = 22,110       "         "      "   X 15 guns = 331,650      "          "       "

203 = 3,300 HE X 4.0 RPM = 13,200 damage per gun X 10 guns = 132,000      "         "        "

          4,700 AP X 4.0 RPM = 18,800      "          "     "    X 10 guns = 188,000      "         "        "

However, there is also the issue of penetration which is difficult to quantify.  Surely the 203 mm guns penetrate better, but better enough to overcome the DPM deficit?

Plus there is the issue of hit rate.  Surely the 155 mm guns (there being 15 of them ) and the much higher RPM allow one to hit the target more times, and more frequently.

So based on empirical evidence (actual play evidence), what do you think does a better job, 155 or 203 mm guns?

Thanks and Happy New Year!

20.3s are underperforming compared to Mogami's 15.5s. Penetration for CA AP is just not reliable enough compared to brainless HE spam and percentage damage caused by fires.

Also the 15.5s are affected by AFT to increase your maximum range (which is utterly stupid). With the current state of HE in high-ROF guns, 15.5 Mogami is superior to 20.3 Mogami.

The only real negatives of the 155's are pen, and damage, and the armor of the turrets. and the fact that you can increase the range and fire rate with just skills only adds to that. Only thing the 203's are really good for is fighting other cruisers.... Wonder what it would be like if the ibuki could also get the 155's?....

I'm inclined to disagree based on my personal experience with 8" AP in CBT

Yes, I forgot to mention the AFT factor.  I don't have it yet but am working the Mogami hard to achieve that.  Then my 15.1 km gun range increases by 20% to 18.1 km.  Makes the 155's a slam dunk in my book as this skill is restricted to guns of 155 mm or less.

I hear that AFT is going to be revised in a future software revision.  Does anyone know how it will be changed?

The 155mm is the better choice imo for 3 reasons.

First, the range.  With a skilled commander you can get a range of 18.1km with a ~better firing arc that the Cleavland.  Couple that with the fire control accuracy upgrade and you actually get some really nice shot groupings.

Second, rate of fire.  With a skilled commander your ROF is amazing.  Couple that with HE and the commander skill for 3% more chance  to cause fires.  You are able to constantly set anything on fire.  You may also want the commander skill for turret rotation as the 155mm turrets rotate slightly slower.

Third, stealth.  This somewhat relates to the range.  With camo and the concealment upgrade your detect range is 10.3km.  Couple those with the level 5 commander skill and your detect will be in the low 9km range.  Now when equipped with the 155mm guns you are able to shoot people at ~15km and not be detected.  ~16km without the commander skill.  The 155mm guns dont cause as much detection as the 203mm guns do.

My Mogami setup:

Main Battery Mod 1

Gun Fire Control System 1

Propulsion Modification 1

Steering Gears Mod 1

Concealment System Mod 1

Concealment Camo

JackBear 1,

That is a nice setup.  You have to have been fighting the Mogami a long time to get to the 5th skill.  I have the same first two but went with the Damage Control System 1 instead of Propulsion mod..  I am surprised you choose the steering shift mod over Damage Control System I (my choice) as the rudder shift time is an already fast 7.1 seconds (in comparison my Admiral Hipper rudder shift time is 12 seconds WITH the mod!).

However, I will look into getting that concealment setup as that seems very appealing.  To hit and not be hit...a winning proposition!

Thanks for the post.

A word of warning, though: the status of the game is constantly changing.

For all we know, WG might suddenly decide to smarten up and return 8" guns to their rightful pride of place.

EDIT: Point being that this HE-spam meta isn't one that can last.

For right now Mogami 155. Only way I'd go with 203's at this point is if the ship offered me no other choice. That was the only boat that really struck fear into me as a DD during ranked play. Any 203mm boat meant a relatively slow rate of fire and ~10 shells to dodge. Not the Mogami 155... it just rained down so many shells so often that I never wanted to be the focus of its attention. That may eventually change if the devs decide they want to shift the meta but until then Mogami 155 is best Mogami.

WG really needs to fix the range on Mogami's guns, so that it's T8 material, not T7, like it was originally at.

WG didn't even touch the stats when they changed its tier.

203 guns across the board need a buff imo.

Perhaps a second or two RoF buff for all 203 cruisers.

Imo high tier cruisers are all sorts of messed up and needs attention.

Yup, the 6" class gun in general is just plain BETTER than any of the 203's.

Hell, they even outperform more than a few BB cannons for everything but a perfect Citadel shot.

Wargaming really, REALLY needs to take a good, hard look at Cruiser guns as a whole.

Like others have said 155s ftw. In CBT the 203s were monsters. But now they just can't compete with the 155s. But a thing to remember Mogami will spoil you, cause when you get to the Ibuki, welcome back to 203s.

Current meta as stated makes the 155 the best pick as horrible as I am with them I cant deny that they are better then 203. You can light everything on fire then if its a cruiser switch to AP for citadels. The reload is short enough that it wont hinder you at all.

I prefer 203s all the way, but that 18.2km range is just impossible to resist.

155s. Just got her. Not gonna pay to reroll with AFT, and my captain here was my first so it has DE, but even with 13.8 (now 15.5) range the ships is a beast with them. So accurate. Through on the accuracy module and hit 8-12 per salvo in BB's (if you show a broadside). Just wish the torps has a better angle.

Thanks for the post.

With IJN CA i find their tank is their speed and maneuverability.  The damage control upgrades arent bad but I choose the propulsion mod because if an IJN CA is in a gun fight and dead in the water, its dead.  I choose the steering gears because my hope is to maximize my ability to dodge or atleast angle and deflect as much as I can.  It has worked for my Atago and Mogami.  I'll use the same concept on my soon to be Ibuki.
