New to the game, and really enjoying destroyers.  (and least at the low tiers I am at)

I'm curious though:

The Clemson and Izy seem (for me anyway) to have a similar style where guns are viable

(as opposed to IJN destroyers where its full time stealth+torpedoes)

Q: Which, for you, is the 'keeper?' - and why?

In my "newbie" opinion, it seems:

Guns - not sure; Izy better rate of fire, Clemson faster turret traverse? both similar range?

Torpedoes - Clemson somewhat better?

Speed/Maneuver - similar?

Stealth - similar?

Izy, IIRC have better muzzle velocity, which means you dont have to lead so much. Plus, it have better RoF than the Clemson.

For Clemson, AFAIK you have more guns with the MK14 which translates to better dpm?

For me, I would kept the Izy (if I have slots for it) just because of its muzzle velocity.

Personally, I can't stand the Izyaslav. I can't wait to unlock the Gnevny. Unfortunately, I've been lacking in my RU DD play ever since I got the Blyskawica.

I stopped at the Clemson on the US DD side because, even though they are gunboats, the fire arc just kills it for me.

No real reason to keep going down the VMF DD line if you have the Blysk, it's really the pre-nerf Kiev.

Current Kiev isn't terrible, but no reason to grind to it if you have the Blysk already and the Tashkent is pretty bad. Ognevoi is forgettable but the Gnevny is nice to have and run.

I may be a bit biased because I love the Izyaslav. IMO, Izyaslav is Beastyaslav if you know how to play it properly. Izy has much better range on her guns versus the Clemson and range buys you versatility. Clemson is a good boat, but the gun range requires you to get into danger close ranges to use them effectively. Izy is best used as an offensive gunboat from 8-10km with torps available to ambush/attack targets of opportunity and for area denial. (She is the only VMF DD to have semi-respectable range, though low damage, torps.) I have played the VMF line up through the Kiev and the Izyaslav is still my favorite of the line. I am almost to the point of unlocking my 4 point captain skill for her captain. With AFT and -3% camo equipped she can invisi-fire from 11.6-12.3km. If you get used to her play style, you can utterly terrorize opposing teams. Here are the score summaries from one of my recent stand out matches in the Izy on Ocean.

I kept my Clemson for sentimental reasons since it was the first destroyer I really enjoyed when I first started this game, and the double-barreled guns are amazing for dueling with other DDs..  Honestly both are pretty good, and the Izy did provided me some entertaining suicide rushes with its short torpedo ranges so I think its more captain's choice as to which one provided you more entertainment than anything.

Izyaslav vs Clemson

I love the gnevy, fantastic for its tier. With buff to destroyers I am thinking of making mahan a keeper as well.

:hmm:

I'm tempted to buy back one or more of the lower tier USN DDs such as the Clemson to see if I play it better now than when I first started. Since the USN DDs were the first ships I started with in this game, I really had no idea what I was doing and my stats show it.

The Clemson is a ton of fun to revisit, especially if you have a trained up Captain. Awesome guns, and you can find lone wolf BBs everywhere at the low tiers that make easy prey for torp rushes.

I have a 15-point cpt in my Atl I may throw in a Clemson to see how it fares.

I've also considered buying back the Fletcher, but I think that was discuss in another thread.

Having played both lines, I personally did not enjoy the Izy for some reason. Its not a bad ship but the gun lay out wasn't fun. The 102s on the Izy are slower but have better range. Specifically, the Izy has a shell speed of 823m/s to the Clemsons 884m/s. Clemy also has a much better torp option with by having a 3x4 set up, 2 on each side compared to the 3 in line on the Izy.

Best part? The Clemson has those 2x1 turrets which means you can get at least 4 guns on an enemy at a high angle.

Being primarily a DD player, I have progressed in all lines. I sold the Izy but kept the Clemson. Something about those double-barrels makes it attractive. Yes, the arc is typical of USN DDs, but once you get used to it you can do well. It was a tough decision for me on which one to keep between Clemson and Nicholas. Clemson won because of the gun layout (I prefer) and the lower tier MM it gets. I disliked Farragut and liked Mahan. May have kept it but needed the money for Benson (my current).

I sold all my RU DDs except my current grind (Kiev). Don't do much Kiev since getting the Blyskawica, a much better gunboat IMO. Gnevni has a slow turret rotation issue, and Ognevoi has a bad layout of 2x2, and as it loses turrets often you find yourself with 50% of your guns gone, or a few times 100% gon. Yes, it's true. Izyaslav is not a bad ship at all, but having too many DDs (I generally prefer IJN DDs anyway), Izy had to go. YMMV.

I am actually thinking about picking up izy again.  I sucked in it when I first had it, but   now i have a decent second VFM captain, so I am thinking about it.  I do remember this ship being buffed anyway.   it seems like tier 4 farragut, which I think is a fun ship.      i am getting tired of t8 matchup  I guess and need t4 for my line up since I've sold isokaze.

It is a fun ship. The speed buff was exactly what she needed to be competitive. I haven't played it in awhile since I hit the 100 or so games I needed to be on the default warships.today leaderboard. The main thing about Izyaslav is that she is the first VMF DD that really comes alive when using gunboat tactics. Additionally, you can selectively engage other DDs of your tier since they have gun ranges that are ~2km less than yours. The only downside is the Imperial Russian AP is just pathetic unless you are under 5km. So, you mainly want to focus on starting fires and aiming at the superstructure. Once I've wrapped up the Tachibana missions, I will have to take her out for a spin again.

I got it yesterday. pretty cheap anyway.       still retraining the captain, but  its been good.    killing DDs and setting fires.          I play her  like farragut. and it seems to be fine.     once I get the captain retrained(should be next match)  I should have fun with AFT.         may be tiny bit of stealth fire, but you are hard to hit anyway.    with reseting ability,  I will see what I will go with.      I use the same captain in aurora, so may be DE would be better than aft.  :)    turret is fast enough, so no need for em.

I tried Izyaslav with AFT and stealth fire was underwhelming to me in practice. I felt like I had much more impact on the game using Demolition Expert and burning down everything in sight. AFT would certainly help though in those matches where you get dumped into a T6 match. Thankfully, we will likely have a free respec coming when the new patch drops in case you were as underwhelmed as I was.
