Yes it's been done with the bb's bur I was curious about how ppl felt about what the best cruisers are. I know both the USS San Francisco an San Diego were both very decorated during  ww2. Me tho I personally like the kutuzov tho I'm sure theirs better I like it's design alot!!!

Takao class, arguably the most well-balanced CA's ever.

In terms of actual wartime performance, Dresden class for WWI.

USS San Francisco definitely, and the USS San Diego as well. The USS New Orleans and Minneapolis would also make the list. Steel also makes a good point in his post above mine with the Indianapolis

Top ships of each class though would be (personal)

1) San Francisco (CA-38)

2) Enterprise (CV-6)

3) USS Johnston (DD-557)

4) USS New Jersey (BB-62)

I only say USS SF because i live close to SF and it has a good story.

One that's actually "legendary"?  Hard to say, cruisers are rarely talked about in the same level as battleships or carriers.  I suppose the Aurora could be a candidate, possibly Prinz Eugen.  I hesitate to name any IJN cruiser, maybe Aoba?  The US has a few possible choices like San Francisco, Helena and Juneau.

Yea BB's it is usually a select few that are talked about and CV's have an undisputed legendary monster. DD's have a few that are talked about, and CL's/CA's are rarely talked about.

People like to see a massive ship do well, or see a little guy stand his ground and fight for his life. That is why cruisers are overlooked, they are like an average not an extreme.

I'd have to say the Helena, for sure.

As far as the States goes I'd opt for Frisco, the New Orleans class in general were pretty much in the thick of it for the entire war but CA-38 fought hard at Guadalcanal and ended up one of the most decorated US ships with 17 battle stars and a Presidential Unit Citation.

Destroyer HIJMS Shigure

Cruiser lots of options for the US, but the HMS Exeter also won fame.

BB - USS Washington - took out a Kongo class one on one (even though at the time the South Dakota got the credit due to secrecy)

CV - No one can ever argue against the Big E

Ya ca/cl where highly over looked an I'm not sure why other than alot of the US crusiers didn't pact the punch of a bb or have the torps like a dd, but they were extremely flexible with very good rof an AA. Again to big ships get the fun an glory lol

HMS Glowworm, a DD that fought the Admiral Hipper one on one during the Norway Campaign, Including attempting to ram the Hipper. Her Captain was awarded the Victoria Cross.

DDs USS Johnston, USS Heermann, USS Hoel, and DE USS Samuel B. Roberts for the battle off Samar. (The last stand of the Tin Can Sailors) Doubtless, the US Navy's finest hour. The Captain of the Johnston was awarded the Medal of Honor.

What's so legendary about the Kutuzov? It never did anything. Or because it's a Russian Warship that didn't sink?

@reddnekk if you'll take the time to reread the post ull see I said I liked the kutuzov an didn't reference anything towards it being legendary, but if you'll also noticed I name 2 very decorated ships that could very well be considered legendary among US ca/cl. As for the kutuzov it was basically the last ussr CL gunship of the old Era before rockets an sophisticated technology was applied to them.

Most legendary and successful --- probably the SMS Emden.   Her raiding career simply is indeed, the stuff of legends.  Her sister ship, the SMS Dresden, also fought well and had a remarkable career.

Admiral Sheer ---  More tonnage is sent to bottom single handedly by this capital ship, than any other.  At 113,000 GRT sunk, she exceeded even the SMS Emden.  Operated from the Atlantic all the way down to the Indian Ocean, traveling over 46,000 miles and evaded the British Navy.  Participated in the mission that caused PQ-17 to abort.  Operation Wunderland brought her in a deep operation against the Soviets in the Kara Sea.  Operations in the Baltic help repulse Soviet air and land attacks, helped in the rescue and retreat of thousands of German soldiers and civilians, including one mission where she carried 800 German civilians and 200 German soldiers herself.  The Soviets lauded her for her firing accuracy. Towards the end of the war, the ship capsized after being hit by a massive RAF air raid while on her harbor.

The Sheer operated with remarkable reliability, which can't be said of the troublesome Hipper class, with equally remarkable skill and luck in her operations.

Yeah, but that's why I always think of the HMS Exeter first when I think of cruisers; she stood up to the Graf Spee and lived to tell about it. I don't think we're going to find a universally most famous cruiser though.

Didn't survive against Myoko class cruisers though.

USN: USS San Francisco

The fifth ship of the New Orleans class heavy cruiser

This CA seen extensive actions during WW2, gone through many surface engagement (including fighting Hiei and Kirishima in 2 different battle)as well as good AA performance protecting US fleet and survive the war.

Eventhough USS San Francisco did accidentally trained her guns to USS Atlanta during the night battle in Guadalcanal, she might still be the most constributing CA in USN.

IJN: Choukai (鳥海)

The forth and final ship of the Takao Class heavy cruiser

Although overshadowed by all her sisters ship, Takao being class name ship, Atago for her flag ship position and in game appearence, and Maya for her Anti-Air modification, Choukai plays a huge role during the Battle of Savo Island and inflict one of the worst defeats to the USN

She is responsible for sinking 3 and heavily damage 1 (which later succumbed) heavy cruisers including HMAS Canberra, USS Vincennes, USS Quincy, and USS Astoria

It is also interesting that she was lost along with her sisters in Battle of Leyte

Did really add this before but was looking into the cb-1/2 Alaska & Stalingrad classes an those seem pretty dang interesting even tho only alaska an Guam were actually built compared ussr's but either way those ships were pretty awesome looking in design

4 heavy cruisers and 4 destroyers v 1 damaged heavy cruiser and 2 destroyers. Not really much chance though. Bit different from Graf Spee facing 1 heavy and 2 light cruisers.
