the german boat line is a joke. honestly the best ships are the koinsberg and the nurnberg. and as you progress through the line the ships dont improve and in some cases get worse. the yorck is the biggest piece of garbage in this game. I just unlocked the hipper and i am not impressed. i was waiting and putting all this time into the german line hoping for a decent cruiser. and i thought the hipper was it. but the armor or hp is just terrible. i got 1 hit from a NM BB from a straight on shot not even a broadside. the HE shells on the hipper are a joke also. the armor needs to be bumped up a bit atleast so it makes it fun to play. when you can get pretty much taken out with one shot makes the german boats no fun to play. PLEASE FIX THE GERMAN LINE.

 

Also lower the repair bill. its so stupid that when you want to play your high teir ships you usually loose money on them. you put all the time and effort into these ships and in the end if you are not the greatest player in this game. you just always loose credits when you play them.

What are they changing? I can'tfind it.

 

My biggest frustration thus far is the Tier 2, 3, and 4 Cruisers feel nearly identical, and it makes the grind very unrewarding.

The Hipper is great, especially after the Yorck. use AP at everything execpt DDs and you will do fine. Dont show your broadside to anything bigger than a DD and remember you have the best cruisers guns. it will take some getting used to after the Nurnberg and the Yorck but its worth it.  Now the Costs  I agree do need to be looked at.

Put the pipe down, load AP in your Hipper and proceed to go destroy everything the ships gods put in front of you.

The german line is definately frustrating to play.  The Nurnberg is particularly susceptible to citadels but starting at T5 their gun characteristics are fantastic.  Its hard to play them aggressively and survive a match so their usefulness in a BB vanguard role is limited but doable if done so very conservatively.  It depends on the flow of battle really but generally you will find yourself turning away frim the enemy more often than you will be turning in as their survivability at medium range is exponentially worse.

 

im taking my time with the nurnberg though. Its a ship of high highs and low lows.  One good rng salvo from a New York can ruin your match.  Im learning to play it as if I start with 1/4 health.

The Yorck is a fine ship once you realize you're a cruiser and you're going to get your [edited]kicked if you try to duel a BB, as you should.

i pretty much use ap round 90% of the time. after i figured out that the he rounds were a joke. i can honestly say though i have hit ships broadside trying for cit shots. max damage i have done is 8k. and i am not kidding. mind you i have played a total of no more then 20 matches with the ship. so maybe just need to put more time into it. its just frustrating that i powered my way through all the ships and my favorite the terrible yorck. and i was expecting that the hipper would be a step up. i am not the best player but i do no how to play the hipper keeping my distance and no showing broadside and sniping using the hippers long range guns. but i am just not happy with it. i am not giving up on it. i just really hope they beaf up its armor or something. so i cant get 1 hit and be out of the match. and have a huge repair bill.

I'm at Roon now. I skipped Kolberg, Karlsruhe and Konigsberg, though Konigsberg is a good ship.

 

Nurnberg is great if fragile. The ROF and shell grouping and velocity is just great. It's a Konigsberg, but better.

 

Yorck is nowhere near as bad as people claim - it's just decidedly mediocre and unimpressive in an otherwise good line and really needs to be played patiently. It's a ship to throw HE with, since HE is the much faster shell and the AP on Yorck is not very good. But is being merely 'servicable' really a crime? Besides, the upcoming buffs address one of the two main drawbacks of Yorck, her slow turrets. Now if they'd just bring her AP velocity in line with her HE velocity as well, she'd be a contender.

 

Hipper is where the guns start getting really, really good, with AP. IMO Hipper is a contender for best tier 8, though one might argue successfully that Mogami still holds that spot. However, I'm never afraid to go up against Mogamis directly in my Hipper. I kept her even after getting Roon.

 

Roon is the best T9 CA, without a doubt. It's a beast if played right. It's a bit fragile, but then it's a cruiser and not supposed to trade fire directly with a battleship, and as long as you mind your angles, she's very tough to bring down with cruiser or destroyer guns. Her own 9x 8" rifles are basically the same as Hipper's - basically the best 8" AP throwers in the game with excellent range, velocity, grouping, pen and reload - just one more of them. Might actually keep her as well.

Agreed, I am doing OK in the York. The German Cruisers are generally very good support ships. Fragile with Amazing gun range. Seem like an obvious play style should come from that. If you keep trying to pound a round peg in to a square hole you will not enjoy the German Cruisers. Play to their strengths and mitigate the weakness and whala good stuff happens.

I am at Nürnberg. Skipped T1-T4 and kept the Königsberg, a great ship if played right. Guns are great, but citadel protection=none. You have to know how to play it. Those two back guns, and the range, are great when running away. Nürnberg, I am having trouble with. Supposedly an improved Königsberg, but I get wrecked more often (twice got destroyed, 100% HP to 0 by a Fuso, in the first two minutes, from 20km away). Besides those two unlucky salvoes, it may be the MM Nürnberg gets.

 

Above that, my experience is anecdotal, having encountered Yorck and Hipper in my T8s. Yorck, I do not fear, as I just play around them and the turrets can't keep up. Hipper is another story. I fear Mogami more (my T8s are Atago and Fubuki), but got wrecked but Hipper in Fubuki a couple of times. Seems like a good ship.

 

As per the high cost? Indeed. That is the reason why I plan to stop at T8 for every line. I have Fubuki, and encountered Kagero very often. Would I go for it? No. Maintenance costs have to become more reasonable as it is easy to lose money.

I am actually liking the Yorck.  It requires much more patience, what I've learned to do is fire the guns as they cross the firing line/reticle if I have the time, which I usually do because you can in NO WAY play aggressively in the brawl zone.  It crushes DD's and can even do nice damage on BB's.  Gotta stay near the backfield and play like a BB, basically...  hope you don't get caught in crossfire, etc.  I've actually gotten some decent citadels with it (I don't get a lot, so I'm always happy when it happens). 

 

I think my saving grace is I started out with BB's...  and as I grind up the Japanese line, have gotten frustrated with the dispersion...  and then decided I needed some CA's and figured 'why not' with the German line.  I suppose if I ever go up the USN or IJN CA's, I'll be amazingly surprised but for now, I'm one of those rare people actually liking this ship.  lol.

I was just reading the 5.2 improvements thread, and this:

 

Germany:

  1. For the German cruisers Kolberg, Königsberg and Nürnberg, armor slopes are now taken into account in the calculation of protection for the engine and magazine, when hit by HE shell fragments. The probability of damage to the engine room from shells with a caliber below 6 inches (150 mm) or less is reduced to zero.
  2. For the Karlsruhe cruiser, the main battery reload time was decreased from 8.57 seconds to 6.5 seconds.
  3. For the Karlsruhe cruiser, the traversing angles for the front turrets (towards the opposite ship side) were changed from 25 degrees to 70 degrees.
  4. For the Yorck cruiser, the turrets full rotation time was decreased from 51.4 seconds to 34.6 seconds.
  5. For the Hindenburg cruiser: the anti-torpedo protection ratios were recalculated.

 

That's pretty awesome.  I'll keep this ship longer!  (likely still be grinding it anyway).

I just purchased Hipper last night and took it for a co-op spin...hoo boy what an improvement over Yorck. The Hipster will probably get nerfed before long.

 

I'm glad to see the Yorck buff, now you can replace the mando turret turn mod with the accuracy upgrade. The super high arcs will still be a problem, but the higher RoF and accuracy should be a consolation. I knew I should have held off on forcing my way through the grind.

What is that icon to the left of the HE round?  Haven't seen that before.

 

That is the icon for turning AA on and off. The "p" key is the toggle

The Hindenburg has a really nasty set of secondaries. If I leave them on, they'll set all the close Yamatos on fire over and over, which makes the screenshot more confusing to look at.
