A blast from the past: CBT Iowa AAA ratings

Some of you weren't around when the Iowa was the undisputed king of removing pesky aircraft with every dual mount 40mm being a quad and every single mount 20mm being a dual, so here's a screenshot and a video.  She was deemed "too powerful" at destroying aircraft due to the lack of tier 9 and 10 IJN CVs (and their pre-nerf strike packages) as she could remove the planes from a tier 7 CV with no care in the world, and tier 8s had to be careful with how they approached her.  To adjust the AAA value for the adjustments to prevent going over 100 with skills, her AAA rating now would be about 75 and the highest in the game.

Edit:  This is also a screenshot from before the blanket nerf to BB turn radius.  For a time when ship turning was brought to a more realistic level (which every ship benefited from) the Iowa could turn in about 720 meters compared to her 920 meter turn radius now.

That video is the bane of my existence. So many comments calling me a noob for not using AP back in closed beta before I had learned all the armor mechanics yet :V all the hatemail all the time.

 

I'm sure it's still doable now with cruisers and maybe a fully maxed Iowa :V

Lexington has an AA rating of 76 bare, her AA rating is just a little higher. Anyhow, that must have been enraging for CV captains, to have a lone Iowa slaughter every one of their aircraft with no effort.

Edit:  And with how much they gimped the high-tier US ships on their AAA, it doesn't surprise me that the Lex of all things has the highest rating.  Midway shouldn't even have dual-mount 40s.

Yeah no kidding, that would make me mad. Unless I had a midway with the OP planes they have.

 

I wish i was able to get in to alpha and closed beta. CVs are my favorite vessels to play, and it seems I started playing this game at the time CVs are nerfed the most.  It would be fun to go back and see how the pre open beta CVs operated.

Now THAT is a battleship haha. It's amazing that this might still be possible with a Montana/AA spec Iowa, but an Iowa may or may not even shoot down 2 Midway planes on an attack run.

Make sure you structure the folders exactly as they are in the res folder and you should be fine.

She was nerfed when the only tier 9 CV was the Essex, and with a smart player the AAA only dampened the blow.  The big kicker was that it wasn't uncommon to see tier 6 CVs in an Iowa, and once their planes entered 40mm range they disappeared.  If you completely spec out a Montana for AAA, you get just a hair less than the Iowa used to doing the same, so essentially Iowa had tier 10 AAA at tier 9 and North Carolina (who had 30-40% of her AAA removed) had the AAA of a 9 at 8.

Yeah, just tried it on my Iowa currently... didn't work out so well as in died in the first wave of torp bombers. Only thing I was missing was the AA range captain perk. Tried it on my NC as well and pretty much the same fate. The turning radius nerf hurt more.

I only use the AA range module as the alternatives aren't great. The extra MB range from 23.4 to 27 is kind of useless and will rarely help especially considering that it seems to make dispersion worse. The extra AA damage mod is okay if you want to full AA spec but since CVs aren't in every game just using the range is a good half measure. Getting even your fast firing small guns out to almost 4km is very helpful.

Back in cbt when i was in my Montana i wouldwrite at the beginning of a match if there were CVs. "We at the society of american AA hope that you are not to attached to your aircraft, as they wont be returning."
