Torpedo Hit Rate

One of my friends started playing WoWs and he just got his South Carolina yesterday. Not long after that he sent me a message saying that torpedoes are so OP. I just lol'd.

I got to thinking about my hit rate with torps and how tough it is for me to land some good hits with them. Now I don't want to brag, but my current torpedo hit rate is 8%. It was 9% before the weekend... I consider myself a low to average DD player.

It's rare that I can land a long distance shot and I pretty much just do those for area denial. I can do close shots better, but it's rare that I get a chance to do that.

So what is considered a good hit rate with torpedoes? How would you improve it?

Might have been me that torped him. I plastered a So Car for full health last night while driving my Fujin. Dude never attempted to dodge. lol.

Given the fact that once the ship is killed the subsequent torpedoes which strike it are not counted as hits, it is very difficult to get a high torp hit rate, even if you exclusively use them to kill. However, area denial is a very important use of torps. Ships dodging torps are not shooting your teammates.

If you have a torp hit rate in the teens you are an excellent torper. 9% is very good.

torpedo hit rate means literally nothing

you imply people shouldn't use them for area denial not to lower their torpedo hit rate? (:

No, but I'm curious what other players consider a good hit rate and strategies for getting more hits. I will always use them for area denial and forcing opponents to change direction, speed, or strategy. But if I could do more damage with them, I'd like to know how.

My average is 9%, Fubuki / Hatsuharu have 12%, apparently the common number is 10%

My secondaries have an average hit rate of 15 to 20%

My secondaries are more accurate than my torpedoes.

20% is what I maintained in CBT with my DDs overall, 12% Kagero & Shimakaze.

DDs in CBT were fundamentally stronger.

5%  here but my average xp is higher in DDs , so I'm not sure how that % is going determine skill for a dd.  But I also play spray and pray with torpedoes.

Since tier 8 up BBs seem to be dodging them every turn.  Adjusting and guessing the BB changing speeds and directions.  I mean, I even hold launches till they make turns.  Unless you getting up close and personal all the time.  But congrats.

Think im only at about 8/9% too.  The higher tier my dd the progressivly lower my torp hit rate.

Trust me, torps are far from OP.  If you don't dodge a torpedo strike but then go and start complaining, that's stupid.

Averaging about 10% in my DDs

8-10 hits a game out of 90-100 launched is enough to get 100k+ damage games at higher tiers.  Although I don't have many kills because I aim for battleships and whittle the, down for friendly ships to finish off.

Lol TBH, I would imply that a lot of people shouldn't bother with area denial. They race to a spot and shoot way too early,  their torps either running out of juice before the enemy gets there, or the enemy encounters them way before they get to a chokepoint, and have unlimited space to dodge the large spread of long range torps.

Right now mine's 12% it had been quite a bit higher (16%) before the smoke nerf and moving into higher tier (7-8) DD's.

Even if they encounter the torpedoes in the choke point, usually it's head on so there's some wiggle room to get between them.

Torpeodes =\= Mines

You can area denial while trying to hit the target at the same time you know? Beside, wasting a 1-2 mins reload just to make a BB turn for 15 secs is a waste of torp, waste of dmg, waste of hit percentages and reveal your present.

Mine is 14%, I'm also an average player.  I am finding though that when moving into the Mutsuki and a few other ships that I get better results when I am playing more of an area denial, and harassment role than out and out trying to assassinate targets with torpedoes.  I'm still adjusting to these tactics from the lower tier ships with the ability to really assassinate BB's, but the tactic means that the hit rate for these is far lower than that 14%.

My torp hit rate is 12%, which includes spamming for area denial.  I thought that was kind of decent.  Rarely do I hit a friendly.

Spot on, don't waste them

I don't always shoot torpedoes with the intention of hitting a target.  Sometimes I will fire them just to make the target turn, especially in a duel with an enemy Russian or Japanese DD since they don't have very fast turret traverse speeds, if you can force them to turn you can potentially gain a crucial gunnery advantage.  Don't unload all your tubes when doing that, though.  Just one launcher is enough, save the others for trying to actually hit, or fire the others behind the lead indicator of your first shot in anticipation of the target possibly turning into them.

As someone else already pointed out, it's extremely difficult to have a high torpedo hit rate because even if you're very accurate you'll get a lot of "overkill" misses, where you shoot 6 torpedoes at a target and all 6 hit, but only the first 3 deal damage and the other 3 hit their sinking wreck, you'll only be credited with a 50% hit rate on that salvo.  So in order to maximize your torpedo hit rate you'd have to be careful not to shoot too many torpedoes at a target, which would just be stupid most of the time.

What could be easier than torpedos? You get shown where to aim and you're launching them at something that takes forever to shift it's rudder much less actually turn.

Hell, you're even cloaked while doing so.

I think I once hit an enemy with a torpedo. Once. Maybe. In myth and legend.

9-10% for me. It has gone down as of late because I have started spamming them more for area denial or herding ships. It works well too.................
