In my Tashkent I just went up against a full health Cleveland at 8km (usually a death sentence in any DD) put six slavos into him, took a little fire though not much (at full speed virtually head on these things are hard to hit) then popped smoke and melted him in seconds. This thing is going to spoil a lot of cruisers days.

That's the entire point of RU DDs. :hiding:

To spoil Cruisers? I find that hard to believe, with their short range Torpedoes. But, they would do as the enemy team shoots at other players and you can start lighting them up - But any American DD could do that.

well, the op killed cleaveland with guns, not with torps

cruisers are not very afraid of torps anyway

usn dd have a bad shooting trajectory, nicholas is already hard to shoot stuff at the max range while ognevoi did it fine, also ru dd have higher caliber

The trajectory of the guns is the main difference between the RU & US DDs. There is no way I would have tried that in the Benson.

RU DDs have a higher velocity/flatter trajectory making them much better at sinking cruisers.

Much much higher than American DDs, that's for certain. I hate their arc and low muzzle velocity.

Thanks for starting this line of question and observation. I hope others will add to this to make future buyers aware or anxious in anticipation of this grand looking ship.

Having only recently gotten into American DD's, up to the Nicholas, it was quite a difference in playstyle versus the IJN DD, which could play a stealthy type stalker. However, taking that new US playstyle and applying it to the RU DD's, very similar and the RU DD's indeed have a much flatter and quicker trajectory. I saved enough free EXP to get all the way to an almost updated Ognevoi hull, but haven't purchased it yet, taking notes of the 4 guns in only 2 turrets and the turrets being of a glass variety gave me pause.

So, I've been awaiting someone's thoughts on the Kiev, to see if I just push past the Ognevoi in purchasing and instead focus my silver and EXP in maxxing out the Kiev, which is only about 5000 EXP from the base hull. Aside from the short range torps common in all RU DD's until tier 8 or 9, what else did you like or dislike about the Kiev? How does it maneuver, it's stealth and overall gun penetration?

Thanks for beating me to a thread along this line.

Sorry, I thought the Tashkent was the next tier after Ognevoi....it is instead the Kiev. Can you tell me how you felt about the Kiev then?  :)

Kiev in my opinion is the best T7 ship in-game, tashkent looks like a straight downgrade to me.

I just moved up to the Tashkent from the Kiev.
The Kiev is excellent. High speed, maneuverable, ~15km gun range, great shell arc, and very nice damage. No ability to stealth fire. But if you sit at 10+ km and weave you are quite survivable. I managed to average about 60k damage a game.
Now I am on the Tashkent and I am not enjoying it. You get slightly better torpedoes and a stealth module. Everything else is significantly worse. Your guns lose a km of range for no discernible reason. You turn much slower, and lose speed in a turn. These all combine that you have to be closer and are much easier to hit. So far averaging maybe 2/3 the damage of the Kiev. I wouldn't want to face a Kiev in the Tashkent. The top range increases, but that isn't much help as that puts you way too close for safe use. They are situationally useful, but not what you are relying on.
I'm very worried moving up to the tier 9 and 10 as they chose to make the guns do less damage 1600 down from 1900. The set of nerfs they laid on the ru DD before launch went way too far. I can understand wanting to nerfing the stealth firing some. But the ships need to have something going for them.

Edit: My phone thinks DDs are nerds!

The Kiev is a fantastic little gunboat and I agree it's certainly the best Tier 7 DD in game (2nd tier 7 overall as I like the Nagato).

Tashkent while from a gunnery perspective is a slight downgrade 13.9km range with 12 RPM compared to 14.7km with 11 RPM the torps allow you to play a more balanced game (I like the ability to use torps without the suicide run). I'd describe the Tashkent as a Benson on steroids.

Haven't got the Udaloi yet but it looks a cracker and can't wait to give it a spin. The Khabrovsk in comparison doesn't look that much better unlike Fletcher to Gearing or Kagero to Shimakaze.

Camo68, Hanslanda and unionlloyd, thank you all for your great feedback. Looks like I'll bypass the Ognevoi updates and save for the Kiev. After the short grind of the earlier tiers, it's nice to see some better playability on the higher tiers. Camo68, thanks for allowing my semi-off topic intrusion and I'm looking forward to the Tashkent too. Cheers.

I got the Kiev yesterday.  Love playing it.  It is quite literally everything you ever wanted the USN DDs to be, but weren't.  Guns that actually travel faster then your torpedoes.  Extremely fast and nimble ship.  2 bow turrets, and an aft one you'll rarely fire.  The AP rounds easily pen a Pepsi, even if it is the same gun you've ran for the last 3 ships, and the reload time is insanely quick.  It's the only DD I've ever ran that didn't fear an Atlanta, Cleveland, or Pepsi.

Going past it, is up to you.  But if you wanna run a gunboat, you want to get the Kiev as soon as you can.

Thanks for all the candid feedback. It's much appreciated. Admittedly when the 2 lines came out, I was going to stay the full German tree, but ran out of steam once hitting the Nurnberg and reading not so good reports about the Yorck, so I took my remaining credits and applied them to the Russian DD line and got as far as the Ognevoi (without buying her) and really liked the more powerful guns of the RU line. So, it's nice to see the line does get better, as does the US and IJN and for once, I didn't have to grind through so many challenging RU and German ships.

I am also anxiously awaiting more input about the Tashkent. She looks like a keeper too and worth the grind.

My newest feedback on the Tashkent is that I mothballed it, retrained the commander back to the Kiev, and moved all the equipment back down to Kiev.

The manueverability of the Tashkent is its huge downfall for me. The Kiev can dodge fire very well. It stays at 37+ kts while maneuvering like crazy. The Tashkent seems to drop into the low 30's and turns slower, all while being a larger target. Survivability in it is a lot worse. I love the Kiev and will hapily keep sailing it until they give some love back to the high tier RU DD.
