Player quality/capability at various tiers?

Player ability by tier!

  1. 1. What do you guys see in terms of player quality and especially situational awareness/teamwork at various tiers?

    • I see the same stupidity and tunnel vision regardless of tier.
    • I think most players do become more capable and team oriented as the tiers increase
    • I think players actually become more selfish as ship capabilities grow
    • You wont find anything near what you're looking for without a clan or some form of organized group.

So it was probably a mistake, but I've been enjoying grinding aways on multiple ship classes across a few nationalities. Currently playing American DDs, American and IJN CA/CLs, American BBs (and the Tirpitz), and then just started dinking around with American carriers. I figured I'd push through these at roughly the same pace, then when done, pick another three or four to work on.

While I'm sure player quality per se improves with experience and thus higher tiers, do you guys notice less stupidity in the higher tiers? I'm about wore out on CVs tunnel visioning their target, only to ignore chat, the minimap, and their teams movement only to get sunk in the first five minutes by a DD skirting up the edge. Then there is the dudes that seem incapable of engaging a target without running aground. Or the BBs whining in chat because [American especially] lower tier accuracy is horrendous. We know it's terrible. It's supposed to be terrible. Alter your player style accordingly. Lobbing AP at  destroyers 1.3km away isn't helping. Same goes with lower tier IJN CVs that are all bent outta shape because their fighters aren't as good as the American ones at Tier IV etc. Even at Tier V I'm still getting torpedoed in blue on blue scenarios not because I pulled some crazy maneuver and crossed his bow, but because we're in some kind of staggered line of battle and they simply aren't paying attention. I can usually dodge those depending on exactly how badly they tried to kill me, but even one torpedoe, especially after a players first dozen games, is beyond asinine. I could list another two dozen gripes but I wont, as I'm sure you guys could tack on five for every one I add and this already sounds like a whining rant, which is far from my goal.

My question is, specifically, should I just focus on something I enjoy and just grind it out to higher levels? Do people's situational awareness go up drastically at the higher tiers? Do players at higher tiers actually cap the flag for a win instead of jumping out of the cap to tunnel vision some target, regardless of the fact that we're now doomed to lose on points? Do DDs and CA/CLs actually help support their capital ships instead of pulling a Yamato style kamikaze run to cut their own throats in the first three minutes? Do fellow carriers actually coordinate at higher tiers or do they still pull the same stupid crapand have a couple of squadrons get wasted on their first sortie because that TB squadron is circling an Atlanta while they blindly try to chase something down with their fighters? Do you guys see these stupid rookie mistakes multiple times out of every ship at the higher tiers or do people actually coordinate and work together?

Take a look at my stats, I'm far from Admiral Sprague or Admiral Yamamoto. But I do try. I do read the forums/watch vids/etc to try and up my game. I will sacrifice my lowly DD to buy a carrier a chance to escape (even though he's in that position in the first place because he herp derped). I do put a lot of effort into trying to assist the team instead of simply trying to buff my credits and XP by ignoring the focus fire to snuff out the last 3% of somebody else's target simply for the kill. I'm absolutely still learning and make plenty of mistake, but I swear the AI's reaction to situations is far better than a huge number of living, breathing human beings I get to play with. Im well aware of the fact that the opposing team is (typically) just as clueless but that's not really the point. Should I just grind it out and look forward to a higher quality of player (not even higher quality....I'd be happy with more 'aware') in later tiers or is coordination and mutual assistance something I should simply not expect at any tier unless grouped with buddies. I'm in my mid-thirties and none of my RL friends play video games aside form drinking beer and playing Madden. Therefore, I can't just call up a real life pal and team up with a few of them. I'm not real keen on joining a clan, but if that's the only place I'm going to find the teamwork and coordination I'm looking for. In a nutshell, can I expect things to improve drastically on those fronts as players gain experience or do you folks still see the overwhelming number of stupid mistakes (keyword stupid, not mistake) in every game regardless of tier.

Hope this didn't come across as just being a whiney little brat but I would like to know what you guys consistently see at higher tiers so I can make some changes if necessary and get more enjoyment out of the game. I'm absolutely loving this game and have been dreaming about something like it for twenty years but some of this stuff is really chaffing my [edited]. For those of you that think a clan is a must for what I'm looking for, does anybody have any recommendations for someone like me (middle-aged, no patience for childish trolling, chat-spamming, or the like, history buff, undergrad and graduate degree in history, US Army veteran [infantry type combat arms that was lucky enough to get an all expenses paid trip to Terrorist Island....multiple times lol])?

Experiences and opinions are more than welcome (that's the goal actually). As a whole I do like this community so far. It doesn't quite seem to be the horrid cesspool that more online communities are...at least not yet!

Players are terrible regardless of tier. Your best bet at getting what you appear to be looking for is to find a clan or a group of people that division. I can get you our TS address tomorrow afternoon(on my phone atm) if you're just looking for people to division with. Maybe if you like us you might consider joining. :P

You should not concern yourself with the quality of other players.

Grind what you want and play to have fun To win too of course.

These are random games and you will never know who you get on your team.

There are many factors that determine the quality of players not just intelligence.

You can be the smartest man in the world but if you are lagging out or suffering an FPS

you become the poster child for window lickers.

I should have been more specific. I don't mean intelligence or stupidity as in one's innate IQ or something along those lines. I mean as in their desire to win and to whatever to achieve that goal. I wouldn't give two [edited]if my KD ratio was 0:25 if my win-loss ratio was 25:0. I do play what I want, but nobody likes losing. I play to have fun and chill out and have fun, and while I'm not one of those players that freaks out and yells at other players if we don't win "you're all horribad, l2p!f" I  do get annoyed after repetitive losses for stupid reasons and will simply go find something else to do with my time. When you're repeatedly grouped with players that have a bigger hard-on for some stupid allocade than winning, that gets old real quick and isn't a player I wanna group with.

Thank's Macabe. I'm not sure what my schedule is this evening but I'll shoot you a PM in advance of when I think I'll have a decent chunk of playtime.

Best thing as far as strategy I can suggest in general is to make your own teamwork. If you see a ship or two doing something not completely ridiculous, help them out.

A meh idea with your support will work better than a good idea with no support, and it's always good to do as much as you can (without screwing yourself) to keep teammates alive.

Even oblivious players will support you if you light targets. (assuming they aren't already engaged)

What I see is side stacking.

If your a good player, new, but may have angered someone the others all know your doomed to get a clan invite or join a squad.

In situations, I've seen group players run off and leave another player solo against 3-5 other ships, do they yell out nope just run.

In one mission I've seen players sit back do nothing and then gripe because we lost.

I get yelled at and then insulted when i tell them in chat you go firsts I'll watch and fight for myself. I still get my share of hits and sinkings in. they get 0

We have some very very rude people that play games 24/7.

I'm retired not retarded, RETIRED, I do not have to work anymore. I enjoy my days as I see fit.

some very good advice here in these reply to the OP..

LIke at least one of them I'm also retired, and having made it to adult hood just as the computer revolutions was starting (I've always been a war gamer since the first time I worked up a die roll kill table for my little brother and I to play with plastic toy soldiers).

We have the X-Box live generation of players that have been filtering into online gaming the last few years that revel in the fact that they anonymous,   And it difficult to hold them to task for online rudeness.  All you need to make a account is an email address, and all you have to do is go to gmail and make one.  The person banned today is back tomorrow.  It's a pain.

Dealing with em:

Every now and again I will call someone on it.. especially if they start popping things like the N word and such.  Mostly though I've had to learn to just ignore them.  If anything I will point out to them that they don't get to make the rules, and to do something about that overbearing ego issue of theirs.

((one advantage of being older .. you know big words and what they mean.. and CAN use them as very effective weapons against childish jerks))

...that is if you feel you must say something in game at all... most of the time you learn to ignore the trash talkers because they generally really are ignorant and stupid.     Too many young kids.. and some not so young that should know better, have this view that elite gamer tudes are cool.  Of course what they haven't quite realized is, they're cool if your and elite gamer.. If thy're not to that level yet (and damd few ever are), they come across like a pout-y whiny 6 year old that needs a little time out in the corner.

None of us are getting paid to baby sit someone else bad parenting issue, (and paid well for it mind you) It IS  work and requires constant awareness and diligence if your going to do it right.  No money, NO WORK!  The game may be free to play, but you and I are NOT!

Lot of selfish, and totally self centered folk out in internet land gaming. and it s been that way since it started over 20 years ago.  AND its not going to change any time soon.    Just be careful to not self isolate from the greater community in reaction to a small number of jerky boys in game.  That happens far to often and I feel its always a shame to see.  I don't want to see them winning.

I think the games get better. After all, later on, ships cost hundreds of thousands of exp and millions of credits to buy, so a person will be grinding on that ship for a looooong time.

And grinding for a loooong time becomes veeeery tiring if you die in the first 5 minutes.

However, my highest tier is tier V, so I can't say much. The coordination is going up, but it's not much (A person saying "I'll escort you" or "Go here then here"). The people who really need to use chat are the carriers... I've had three perfect games where me and another carrier both used chat, and utterly wiped out all opposition.

But yeah. Those are my two cents.
