I must admit I was going to be one of 'those' players complaining about torp spam, low detection, etc. After watching more vidoes that I care to admit. Then playing a few matches in my Tier IV ISOKAZE, I found I am having way more fun and see why there are some really good DD drivers out there. Getting more and more kills, ambush tactics and playing to your stats is so key. Just wanted to tip the hat to those really skilled DD players and for posting their videos on-line for others to watch. Thank you Captains!

Thanks, being on the receiving end of a torp wall time after time then ambushed coming around an island.... love the tactics, I learned to change the way I drive my CA, and BB's for sure. Ambushing the ship that's trying to ambush everyone else, that's satisfying.

Instantly sunk and cursing the bloody DDs. A couple of weeks later I started DD's, launched a speculative spread of torps near a headland carried on with what I was doing and a minute later Boom some poor sucker ate the lot of them. More often than not in my case there was 1 or two lurking near by.... was in my BB the other day and I was making a slow crawl near an island when I saw the torp spread and had plenty of time to react, once clear went full, had the ammo ready rounded the corner, nice ripe CA waiting for my guns, detonation later, he messaged me "I thought I had you! GG" . I am loving this game more and more as I learn.

Putting torps into another DD is pretty awesome. Even gunning them down is great. It's one of the reasons I play USN DDs, to get in gun fights with the IJN DDs. Would like other DD captains inputs and those that face the scourge of our seas.... Would like other DD captains inputs and those that face the scourge of our seas.... (kidding guys(captains) as the post suggests, total respect here) Very much more gun-oriented. Your torpedoes are good in USN DDs, but they have a much shorter range which makes it impossible to sit outside detection range & just lob salvo after salvo in the direction of the enemy (typical low-tier IJN destroyer tactic). Playing a USN destroyer well requires a completely different tactical approach, along with a great deal more thought & planning.

Been learning her over the past few weeks try to get the right feel for her. DD skipping def has a higher tempo than other ships but once you know that tempo she is very easy to get a rhythm in. if you see my battles in the last 24 hrs some things really clicked last night. In the end i got him with a early torp launch that caught him as came around an island...but was honestly one of the better battles within a battle. Don't remember the guys name but i give him a salute well played ! Its interesting as well as the many of the DDs become less about damage and kills and more about team play as you move up the tiers..., becoming more of scout, area denial of sections of map, anti DD patrol, sneaking the odd cap here and there...and occasionally catching a carrier or three in the open. DD play definitely evolves as you move past T4...esp for USN...but tis still fun...and always like riding the edge of a knife..past T4 most everything can smoke you if you make an error...you are of way more use to stick with your team as support instead of racing off by yourself and spamming torps at passing BB's.

I have noticed that in my T6-T8 BB and CA matches. The DD's will hunt in packs or run scouting missions for the BB's long reach. I think I am going to be grinding the IJN DD's more. Well done. Isokaze is one of my old keepers. Really good DD. Thanks, I was going to give up on DD's when I realized I need to adjust my thinking about how to play them. You really need to be sneaky and play to your ships advantages to stay alive.... Edited October 30, 2015 by Skull_004
25 Soylent7 Members 117 posts 1,583 battles Report post #24 Posted October 30, 2015 Depending on the map I still find myself roaming out on my own or with a few others, reason being is early spotting. Sure BBs can reach out to 20km but seeing those targets comes down to having a spotter. Not much glory in spotting but it does help win games. Another thankless job(when it comes to xp/credits) is capping. Early caps usually comes down to DDs which usually comes with making a bee-line to the zone. Now that isn't to say I'll keep trying when spotted, I'll usually stay safe and try to interrupt enemy cap. But if you can get cap, it's usually better than trying to take an enemy cap. Also speeding up field establishes the line of battle further on the opposing side of the map. If you can get the line of battle as far on to their side of the map, you'll give the enemy less room for them to maneuver and more room for your team to maneuver. It will also give you control of zones that are on your side of the line of battle.

Why I am appreciating the DD skippers so much, they really do have to be in the thick of it at times with little or no reward.
