IMO IJN have the better battleships. US BBs are better when it comes to AA defense. IJN are better is ship to ship combat.

I think that question is heavily dependent on the tier.

3 - Kawachi or South Carolina > definitely South Carolina

4 - Myogi or Wyoming > Majority prefer Wyoming, Myogis 3 turrets and bad dispersion make it unloved

5 - Kongo or New York > For me Kongo, but its a rare example of 2 ships at same tier both being good

6 - Fuso or New Mexico > Once again both good , choose according to your playstyle

7 - Nagato or Colorado > I liked neither of these but gun to my head ... sadly probably Colorado

8 - North Carolina or Amagi > Nagato killed enough fun that I stopped IJN BB line here and could not motivate to keep grinding.  NC is a great ship which i like playing, but I'm not playing it now because of the wait times added in by the influx of the Derpitz.

That's how far I've managed in the BB line ... I am sure there will be replies  to tell me how wrong I am :) and how its worth it to grind to Yamato for IJN and at least Iowa for USN.

For BBs if all comes down to those big guns and their performance! American BBs have shorter ranges but are usually more accurate and have faster reloads. IJN have longer ranges and hit harder but have longer reloads and are often inaccurate.:bajan:

For me Personally, I like both but I play my American BBs more. I'll most likely convert to German and Italion BBs once they are added though. why? because I like ships that are sexy!

I prefer the USN battleships. I like to brawl in them and their strong armor helps me accomplish that. Their speed is awful until the North Carolina. Like others have said it depends on your play style. I can only really speak on tiers 3-8. If you like to brawl in BBs and don't mind the slow speed choose USN. If you rather have a faster ship and engage enemies at range choose IJN.

That is not a bad run-down, though I'm surprised you had such bad luck with Nagato... I personally loved my Nags enough to keep it (I didn't particularly hate Colorado but sold it to buy my NC)

NC and Amagi compare a lot like Fuso and New Mexico, Amagi is a little faster and has an extra gun, but poorer protection... Both real good ships.

I haven't made it to T9 or 10 either, tho the consensus seems to be Iowa is better than Izumo and Yamato is better than Montana.

The biggest difference between the lines is speed/armor. Until tier 9, the Japanese ships will be faster and occasionally will take more devastating hits.

American armor does work (I've seen well played New Yorks bounce shells from my Nagato) but it won't save you if you get into trouble and with your slow speed (until north carolina) you aren't likely to run away from trouble.

IJN does generally get a range advantage, though I feel it's mostly psychological as scoring hits at 20km is more a function of your target not using their rudder than "skill".

I went for the IJN in closed beta up to the Izumo.  The Izumo is a pain! disliked it.

Now that the game is live, i went USN and am currently on the Colorado.

- IJN are fast BBs with so-so armor (mostly because they are BattleCruisers instead of real BattleShips) and excellent fire range.  I personally loved the Amagi and will be grinding for it after i finish my current grinding lines.

- USN are slow with heavy armor and relatively poor range.

What is your playstyle?  Do you want speed? Range?  Go IJN, do you want more brawler style of play with better AA? Go USN.

Id start with the USN first, get used to the slowness, and then go IJN and be happy with the speed.   It was depressing in CBT to start the USN line after getting used of IJN Speeds.

Help me what Is best to use?

Depends on play-style.

IMO IJN have the better battleships. US BBs are better when it comes to AA defense. IJN are better is ship to ship combat.

At Tiers 4 - 6, USN BBs are actually great for close range brawling. Especially at 10km and under, the number of guns they have plus armor helps. IJN BBs are generally good at ranges of 10km and up. Kongou and Nagato are especially good at 21km engagements, with the Yamato being the longest range hitter in the game. (I think her range is stock 26km?)

As such, the reccomendation I make:

Play both to Tier 8. After Tier 8, you can choose which one you like best, because at Tier 8, the lines start to balance out in terms of range. (IJN Out-ranges and out-performs the USN at the lower tiers in most aspects except for close-range brawling. Although, Kongou kinda excels in ALL aspects at Tier 5, even close range brawling. But she's just a VERY well balanced ship which is why she does so well. If WG can take a page out of her book, then every other ship would actually perform well.)

But, from personal experience, I prefer IJN overall, their ship designs are elegant, and beautiful. They're not fat, they're not too thin. Their super-structures actually look great, and they just have this allure to them. Whereas USN ships are just... meh. For aesthetic reasons alone I am not playing them because they hurt my eyes when I look at them. The only good looking ones are the North Carolina and Iowa in the tree at the moment. Likewise, Kawachi, Fusou and Izumo are butt ugly as well, and Izumo isn't just ugly, she's boring as hell to look at too. I don't even think she can make a thrilling combat scene feel thrilling enough, thats how boring she looks.

Its all down to playstyle though.

I have gone US route for BB, US for cruisers, Japanese for DD. On the carriers? depends on which format you like, ie... more squadrons or less squadrons with more planes as I understand it. Forgive me, I am not great at carriers though.

I haven't played the USN line but I adore the IJN line.

Didn't like Kawachi, some say she is good but eh. Positives: guns on all sides, turns pretty well and a good amount of guns. Negatives: slow, range is terrible and the guns can't all be pointed at a target because of the turret set up.

Myogi was a meh ship, didn't like her but I didn't dislike her. Positives: turrets are quick, bigger guns than Kawachi and the Tier 4 USN BB and is fast. Negatives: only 3 turrets (6 guns), armor is bad and bad dispersion and lack of guns make for a bad combo.

Love Kongo, favorite ship in the game. Positives: fast, good guns, good armor angling and slim. Negatives: Long, guns turn slow, and not the best armor.

Fuso was good, like Kongo but slower and more guns. Positives: Lots of guns, they turn faster than Kongo's and have a smidge faster ROF. Negatives: kinda wide, floating citadel and still not the best armor.

Nagato was great, like Kongo but slower and better guns. Positives: Strong guns, they turn faster than both Kongo's and Fuso's and dem secondaries. Negatives: AA is bad for her tier, a smidge slower ROF than Kongo and can face some pretty nasty ships if MM decides to screw you over.

I haven't played the other ships of the IJN line yet so I can't say anything about them. Some common things all IJN BBs have are they are faster than the USN BBs until Tier 8 (then the USN start to catch up on speed) and they have better range until Tier 8 (the USN catch up).

JAPAN...

That's just my opinion.  I have played American but I have always liked the under-dog.  The IJN line is powerful, survivable, and just fun to play all around.  With the Russian and German lines getting ready to set sail...my opinion may or may not change...

Japanese absolutely. Up until Tier VIII they're consistently better. Player scale being completely equal, numbers of ships being equal with 3 USN BBs and 3 IJN BB tiers 3-8 you're going to lose over and over again. Brawling isn't always an option. You don't sneak up on anyone in any BBs. It get's massively old getting hammered by IJN BBs and even cruisers that outrange you, only to finally get inside 14 [edited]km with 10k hp. You're at your teams whim with American BBs at low tiers. With IJN BBs you can significantly influence battles. I think it's trash but also have an undergrad, graduate degree, and soon to be PhD in history and little wargaming does makes sense from a historical or balance point of view. I'm far from a stellar player but my 0.4 KD ratio has gone up to 0.9 and climbing now that I've given up on American BBs. May be my play style but I think equal tier'd ships should come down to player skill, not one player getting to engage 6km sooner with harder hitting and more accurate guns.

In my limited experience, I'd go with the U.S. BBs. At mid-close range, my New York can tear apart anything it hits.
