Realism?? Not quite

Not seeing torps until the last second from destroyers you cannot even see? Baloney!  You could have the quickest reactions on earth and the most nimble ship in the universe and you still would not have enough time to react to this in WOW. First of all in the real world you CAN see destroyers at longer range than you can in WOW and second, if you see torps in the real world you have some semblance of time to react to them, even in a BB.

I'm sure I may be attacked a bit for my position here, but that said I also know I am not alone. This lack of realism takes away from the joy of playing the game and quite frankly it also takes away from my desire - and the desire of many I have spoken to - to open their wallets for it.

If you are going to present a different point of view here (I know thats part of what the forums are for) please do it in an adult manner, so I can have some respect for your point of view, and maybe you can help me come to terms with why this foolishness exists in this otherwise great game.

Thus is a PEBKAC problem, the solution for anti torpedo actions is very simple. Pay attention to the minimap and don't sail in straight lines for longer than 15 20 seconds.

Using the real world to further your point doesn't really help when you're talking about an arcade game. WG has and is going to continue to sacrifice realism for gameplay.

Well thats not true either as you can see them about 5 to 6 km out unless the DD is next to you when it launches them.

This is a game, not real life. WG isn't trying to make the game a simulator. The spotting mechanics are for balance, if you could spot them at a range where dodging is guaranteed, DDs would be useless. They are already a very badly performing class, just pressing the A key or slowing down for a while can make a torpedo salvo useless.

It's fairly simple, WG wants to reach as wide an audience as possible with this game and the best way to do that is to make it an arcade-y type game.

And in arcade games Fun and/or Balance > Realism and/or History.

It's not a simulation. WG has made sacrifices to realism to balance the gameplay. No one would play destroyers if they were visible from 15 km away and as weak as they are.

It's not a realistic game, nor does it intend to be one. Dodge torps before you see them, change speed and course often and you won't have to worry about it.

Yeah, it's an arcade game not a simulation... In real life DDs would only have 1 maybe 2 tubes worth of torps for combat use, but 1 or 2 torps would knock a Battleship out in real life too. It works!

Okay Captains. Your point in that this is not a simulator has been taken into account. I am now stepping off of my pedestal on this issue lol!  I honestly thought that Wargaming was making a concerted attempt at realism in some aspects of the game such as this. I stand corrected and the next time this happens, I won't get so wound up over it. Thanks for the comments :-)

Paying attention to the minimap has been a strength of mine since day one. It's a wonderful tool but if what you are looking for hasn't been detected, it serves no purpose. Zig zagging of course is something I need to work on lol!  Please see my other post regarding this topic.. Seems the other Captains have set me straight on the realism issue lol!  Happy Hunting!

But yes, one must be patient with the torpedoes of the destroyers, because remember, destroyers get blown apart if they receive a hit from an adversary and their own guns are typically capable of only inflicting minimum damage. Torpedoes do a lot of damage, but it's alpha damage, as opposed to shooting an enemy with a gun over and over for more sustained, reliable damage. Think of destroyers as assassins, cruisers as fighters and battleships as big bruisers.

okay, then here is how I would implement realism

1.Remove all speed and size scaling add 1 hour games with 4 times normal xp.

2.Remove nametags above ships.  Remove indicators from torpedoes.

3.Render all ships but implement curvature of the earth.

4.Realistic rangefinders and gun targeters implemented.

5. Accurate guns and torpedoes.

6. Simulator level flight mechanics.

7.New damage model(no hitpoints)

8.Realistic smoke

9. New economy/upgrades

I can't wait till Warthunder releades ships.

The way the mini map helps is when you know how the enemy thinks. DDs love using islands for ambushing and using the minimap plus situational awareness, you can find out where a hidden DD is quite easily. It also helps to play DD. To think an enemy, you must play as the enemy, it goes a long way to playing against DDs

It's the best we have at the moment.

I'm a purist in terms of simulation but I understand real naval battles could take hours each so it's not exactly practical.

WoWS is the best game of its kind at the moment. Simple as that.
