Princeton LPH-5 for 3 years. As mentioned in WOW WIKI, the original Princeton, (not really original as she was the 4th ship in the US Navy named Princeton dating back to a Sloop in 1834) was an Independence Class CVL commissioned in 1943 and the only U.S. Carrier to be sunk in the Battle of Leyte Gulf in 1944. Now, here's the rest of the story....Princeton's ordnance was detonated and caused a number of explosions before she finally sank. During one of those explosions, her Captain, JM Hoskins, was wounded, losing his foot but staying with his ship until the very end. During his recuperation, an Essex Class carrier to be called the Valley Forge was being built. In recognition for his amazing recovery (he went back to full service) and the ship that was lost, the new carrier's name was changed from Valley Forge to Princeton, CV37. Princeton was built too late to participate in WW2 but was one of the first carriers to launch jets in Korea, In 1959 she was designated LPH-5 (Landing Platform, Helicopter) and from 1964 to 1970 she participated in numerous operations taking Marines into battle in Viet-Nam. Her last service was to pick up the Astronauts of Apollo 10 before she was decommissioned in 1970. Her name lives on in the U.S.S. Princeton CG59, a guided missile cruiser launched in 1989 and still on active service. Edited October 5, 2015 by Princeton_5

USS Johnston was sunk at Leyte Samuel B Roberts was sunk at Leyte Hoel was sunk at Leyte These are just 3 specifics, I know other American vessels were sunk at Leyte. Along with a hoast of IJN Ships, including Musashi. Maybe you mean only American carrier sunk at leyte? Edited October 5, 2015 by Skramjet
