I'm currently trying to unlock the Zao. right now i'm stuck on the Furutaka and i absolutely hate it. it fires too slow and doesnt have very much firepower for how slow it shoots. im just wondering. is it worth it to slowly upgrade my ship to make it so im not suffering to badly? or is it better just to push through and research the next ship all at once. if that makes any sense

Do you mean the unlocks or the slot upgrades?

You are firing HE and trying to play the Furry Taco like a Kuma.

Load AP, and if you can aim, RIP any cruisers you are shooting.

You have to research some modules. There should be arrows pointing down from one module to another. Example.

See how it goes Kongo (A) then to Kongo (B) then to Fuso? Means you have to research Kongo (B) before you can research Fuso.

Kongo has 3 hulls, but it still applies.

Before you can research the Aoba, you have to research the required path. But you don't have to buy said upgrades.

In the really quick grinds, I guess you don't have to upgrade all the modules, but by tier five, the modules make the rest of the grind go faster (not to mention some of them are required anyway).  So I'd go for it.

The upgrades are probably worth it at about tier 5 or 6 too.  Below that you might not be playing enough games with a ship to make it worth it, but you'll probably want it for the longer grinds.

Well that is an old pic.

really? because i have just been buying the ships directly and haven't been upgrading the hulls

You can do this if you have enough XP to pay for both, but the game still charges you for the intermediate upgrade anyway.  If you have a ton of free XP, for example, and you want to skip a tier, you can just click on the next tier ship you want to research, but if there are require modules in front of that upgrade, the game will add that XP to the total.

Buying the hull upgrades, module upgrades and also the equipment slots is always worth it.

There isn't a single ship in my harbor that I am playing that is un-upgraded, except for Myoko, but that's because I am grinding for her C hull now, tired of carriers trying to harass me so much.

Furutaka's 8" guns are always better than her 7.9" guns, and her C hull is WAY better than her stock hull, better mobility and HP. Buy those upgrades, it makes life ALOT easier.

For the mid/low tiers I think its a no-brainer since the costs are much less.  Why not purchase it all.

It all depends on how much you like the ship and what the upgrade does.  Of course you still have to spend the research points to unlock to the next tier, but you don't have to purchase and equip it.  I am on the Mogami and the 'C' hull costs 2.1 million credits, and all it gives you is a little bit more AA.  For me I honestly do not think that it is worth the 2.1 million.

just need to research them usually and not buy them. I would highly recommend sticking with it though because you learn the transition from having 6inch guns to 8 inch guns and that ship, if treated right, will dominate. Pretty decent spread on the shells and can easily rack in several citidels per salvo when running ap (8k-12k damage per salvo) against cruisers dumb enough to run broadside to you. Also does decently well against bad BB players with those AP shells. Rarely do you want to run HE in this thing unless it's a tier 6 or 7 BB or they are at an extreme angle to you.

Certain ships are going to need their upgrades to be competitive in matches. For example, the American New Mexico and Colorado BB's are terrible stock and have little to no AA meaning you'll be easy pickings for the enemy carriers, so having hull upgrade B and C adds AA and makes you a less tempting target. Here is a small rundown of what the upgrades tend to do.

Hull: Increases HP, adds better main/secondary/aa battery(in some cases adds more main guns), adds better performing shells, and also aids in decreasing rudder shift time.

Range: Adds +10% range to your stock range

Engine: Makes your ship go faster, so if you have a stock New Mexico/Colorado, the stock speed is around 18 kts, upgraded tops out around 22kts.

Personally, if you are having issues advancing through higher tiers, try upgrading your ship and see how it performs after that.

Generally a good idea to upgrade everything on the Furu, since you're going to be stuck with it for a while.

Also, if you see another cruiser, fire AP at it.

I upgrade all my ships... Even the lower tier ones. It makes them better. Also the higher resale value of them when you trade them in for the next ship. Its credits that you cant spend while they are mounted and hence that much more twards the next ship in the line. Also I like to have a ship with a little more of an edge vs those who dont upgrade their ships. Like my Tirpitz I have my AA on par with most tier 8 ships where as I compare mine vs others and My AA rating is 21 points higher. I dont like taking a ship out unless it has all the modules upgraded. Now the Refits and such I just grind thru them. Captain is the only thing I am a stickler about. I retrain them fully before I take the new ship on its first battle because a ship is just pure crap till the captain is at 100 percent.

For IJN CA, you will want all upgrades you can get, as there's literally no downside to them.

Now, if you want to talk about the Farragut... that is best in stock configuration + GFCS.
