Mine jumps around from low 30s to the 150 range. So I tried a few free ones without any luck. Any thoughts?

By using a VPN connection, stability depends on your internet connection AND the internet connection of your VPN 'host'. Whereas a non-VPN connection would just depend on your internet connection. In my case, not sure why this is, but my route takes me from SW Ontario to the Netherlands before going to San Jose. That causes higher pings & instability. My connection is solid with 100meg down unlimited.

Is that even possible from a home computer? Or is that something the ISP has to do?

Network stability is not the primary reason for using VPN. My only experience using it was with my corporate laptop in a previous job. It pretty much cut the pipe in half. You need to connect to a VPN server and it basically passes your connection through there. So if you use a VPN server too far away it will add distance to the game server (and increase your ping). I am guessing the goal of using VPN is cause that basically connects you to a portal which has the potential to use better quality internet connections to get to the game server. Basically the internet is often like a toll road and if you get better lines then you get better quality connections. (The tolls are often paid for by the services like netflix to help their customers be able to get decent quality.). That is why it would be better for consumers to have net equality rather than [edited]cable companies deciding what services you should be using. I really only use VPN mainly to connect to japan to get better connection there, and it has helped my connection. Honestly never tried it for wargaming. Theres no netgraph in this game so its harder to tell whats going on.
82 InspGadgt Alpha Tester 874 posts 5,544 battles Report post #13 Posted October 5, 2015 I guess if you VPN to a network that takes a different route to WG that bypasses the router where packet loss is highest that could work. It wouldn't be a direct VPN connection to WG.

It might be a combination of a higher class router capable of a static route and ISP support.
