Atago verse Tirpitz

I am having trouble justifying playing the Atago with all these Tirpitz floating about.  I have both ships and am finding the Tirpitz tends to pound the Atago down.  Yes they are different classes but they float the same waters and do end up engaging.  What is your experience?

As it should.  BBs are supposed to pound cruisers; Tirpitz in particular is supposed to excell in this roll as it sacrifices some power for engaging other BBs in favor of characteristics that make it even more lethal to cruisers.

Between the two the Tirpitz is the far superior ship and as you said the meta is BB heavy at the moment so very punishing to play a cruiser. I have both and definitely prefer the Tirpitz, if you are crafty you can sneak some 10km torps and kill some bad Tirpitz players with the aggressively angled front launchers. The Atago requires much more skill to play well and is far less forgiving.

One has armor and bigger guns, the other doesn't. You expected different?

The entire game is Rock/Paper/Scissors.... The Battleship will usually win against a Cruiser.   The only exception to the rule being the talent of the actual Captain.

Depends on how you play. Of you're skilled with ijn cruisers the atago is for you. If you like a the swastika gold bullion factory...the tirpitz is for you.

As a BB driver, I love Atagos.

Just division up with a Myoko, then when you're sent to the Tier 8 match, make him go first.

Atago captains seem to think that "I have torps so I must get close enough to use them" and they just get sunk early in the match.  For this reason I hate to see Atagos on my team since many (not all) are the first to die in most battles.

So the one to pick is the one that suits your play style - BBs or cruisers.  Just don't pick the Atago and play it like a BB or destroyer and expect it to do anything but get sunk.

Yeah, when I play my Atago and lots of Tirpitz show up, it reminds me of bringing a pocket knife to a gun fight.

Since the Tirpitz rolled out the T8 cruiser grind sucks.  I am hating trying to upgrade the very average New Orleans.   Doing much better when I drive Mogami though.

Atago is A whole lot more dynamic and flexible than Tirpitz.

If you're going at any BB in a cruiser in a one vs. one fight, especially at higher tiers, chances are you are going to lose. Also consider that the citadel on the Atago is huge so it is easy to hit. The Atago, like all the higher tiered cruisers, are a thinking man's ship. It takes patience and tactical awareness to forecast the battle and use the maneuverability of the cruisers to get into advantageous positions with escape options to re-position.

Proven tactics fior cruisers:

1. Start the match using your AA abilities to help cover your BB's.

2. Never go in a straight line once you engage.

3. When the BB's engage with enemy ships, look for positions to flank and support them. Most players will keep focusing on the first target (you team's BB's) which can absorb damage and let you fire at will on them. You have a minimap for a reason so watch it and be aware of enemy cruisers and DD's attempting to do the same thing and change targets as needed to protect yourself and your team mates.

4. Always have an escape strategy in case things get too hot and avoid narrow passages where you can be set up in a trap for torpedoes. There is no dishonor in disengaging so you can gain the advantage in a different position. Surviving means you can keep using your guns to help your team win.

5. Most importantly, you are on a team so play like you are on one. No one should expect you to take on a BB in a cruiser alone. If in doubt, stay with your team mates and go where they go. Going alone will just get you an early swimming lesson back to port. There is also a chat window for a reason so use it as well to communicate with your team. Don't be the weak link that causes your team to lose the match because you failed to communicate something they need to know to adapt to the situation.

On the contrary I find the BB-heavy matchups make my Atago even more fun over the Tirpitz. I have better maneuverability and great torp range, which I can use to my advantage. Staying at range and peppering targets with HE and setting them on fire works well too.

Yes the Atago has a big giant citadel but if you're constantly presenting it to BBs you're doing it wrong.

Just talk WG into selling a tier 8 premium destroyer, that'll give Atago something to shoot at.

I prefer Atago to Tirpitz, largely because Atago gives me more tools to work with, allowing me to adapt to a variety of situations (as a good cruiser should).

I had a game in Atago not horribly long ago where I bagged 3 Tirpitz on North.  They were determined to push south down the 7-8 line through the gap in the islands.  Myself and a Fubuki bottled them up nicely between torpedoes, smoke, and HE spam.  Similarly, I have gutted Papercolas and New Orleans' in only a couple of salvos of AP.

Atago in the right hands is a better ship, IMHO.  As noted above, though, playing a heavy cruiser at high tiers is more difficult than playing a battleship, and you will occasionally have games where you get citadeled to death just trying to get into position.

Except that I can citadel them (the Atago) head on and force them to run and hide for the next 10 minutes or so, thereby rendering their maneuverability pointless....

They are capable if you weed out the DDs and other CL/CAs, then start working on the BBs in conjunction with other ships.  Alone, you're going to die badly.

I have New Orleans as well and am grinding credits for the concealment upgrade.   I deal far better damage in the Atago than NOLA.  Even with the BB heavy MM with all the Tirpitz, I think it is actually helping me with high tier credit grind with more less-experienced players in the game.  I do much worse when the high tier battle is better balanced by ship class where there are few to no prems involved because the level of play is higher.

Anyway right now my Tirpitz and Atago make enough money for me to play NC and NOLA without really needing to play the lower tiers.

If im feeling like sniping I typically will go with the Tirpitz, but over all I am a cruiser player so I default to the atago as my go to prem tier 8, it allows me to be aggressive when needed and with its armor I can take on most BBs at or below my tier and do ok. the Atago is harder to use because you need to know how to maximize its armor, if you can do that I would say run the atago, if you are still unsure of your strengths, play the tirpitz

Atm there are way too many BB in a lot of games to play cruiser effectively.  When you see games with 8 BB 1 cruiser 2 DD, theres no point in maximizing armor or even playing cruiser unless you enjoy being shot at all day.  Tirpitz is much better atm.

meh, yea there are a lot of BBs but all the more reason to play a CA, I like the BB matches, I often find myself being able to support a large BB brawl with little return fire, and even when the turn to hit me its easy to break contact. but again im a CA/DD player so I am more suited for the more agile skirmishing play rather then the brawl.
