Really Bad

So far, at about 360+ battles, I am really bad at this game. I tried co-op for a while to get used to my ships. I have listened to as much as I can from my clan's players. I still suck. I find that when I choose a ship to sink, he loses, I develop tunnel vision. Of course I normally get a kill that way, but I wake up in the middle of the enemy. I have to watch that. I need real training and real practice. I get real good when teaching someone the game or the base usage of their ship, even in random. When on own? I am terrible. I could stand all the suggestions I can get please. I love this game, win or lose, but winning is more fun.

Have you tried watching any of the ship guide out there? They can be found under the Newcomers forum and Discussions about warships. There are also lots of videos on youtube. I've got a channel as well and it may be useful to you:

hope that helps

Situational awareness is important. I have done what you said, being engrossed in getting a kill, and finding you have chased the kill back to his backyard, and are now being greeted by his friends.

Keep a look at the minimap, zoom out from binoc mode while guns are recharging, and look around. Can you keep the chase? Or is it better to give up the chase and come back to safety? Are there any avenues for exit , where you can easily turn around in the next couple of km, or will you be stuck between a rock and a hard place?

Not easy to do, I am still guilty of getting in that situation every so often, when I should have known better. Every battle has lessons to be learned.

Thanks folks. I'll start watching as many videos as I can.

Anytime!

Tunnel vision happens to everybody, even the best players fall into the trap on occasion. But like alexf24 said, zoom out between shots, look around, and check the minimap. Watch what's happening for a few seconds before zooming back in to see where your shells land, and you can gain all sorts of useful information. Once you get the hang of that, you'll find that your situational awareness has improved immensely, not only preventing you from sailing into choke points, islands, and groups of enemy ships more often than not, but also allowing you to "see" (and avoid) incoming torpedo attacks long before you get the audible/visual warning, simply because you'll know where the destroyers/bombers are, if they're spotted, and will be able to watch them as they try to set up their attack runs.

Don't get discouraged if you mess up and tunnel vision now and then. Everybody does. But once you train yourself to habitually zoom out and look around, it will happen far less often, and you'll be a better player for it. The fact that you're aware of this weakness and asking for suggestions on how to correct it means you're already ahead of the curve. Cheers!

I have watched several vids now and am trying to immolate them, however. My last four battles, while staying in formation, at range..... after a few minutes turn around and half my team is gone , ie...dead, or have left for safe havens instead of getting in the game. If anyone checks my stats you'll see how bad I am, lol, but darn it, it sure would be nice to be with decent teams. I got on with noobs this am for warmup and we won by following instructions and staying together. Tier 5 and 6? Ok, my whinings over.

Improve your own skill and you can compensate for some amount of weakness on the part of your teammates. Sometimes the fail is just too strong for you to carry, but seeing yourself at the top of the list is vindicating, even when you lose. Good teams are a luxury, but don't get used to it! Haha. Actually, because I'm not an especially good player myself (pretty average, possibly a little better than average), good teams full of strong players tend to steamroll the other side and win whether I'm in the thick of it or not! As a result, I prefer average teams, ones that don't fail utterly, but aren't strong enough to win without my contribution. It keeps me thinking and forces me to perform. And, if I do well, I get lots of kills, damage, and rewards.

Range is a tricky thing. Having it is nice, and using it is nice, when you can. But sometimes you can't. You have to be willing to trade range for position when it is advantageous to do so. Guys that sail around in the back engaging targets at their own max range, all the time, generally aren't exerting enough pressure to keep the enemy from moving up and controlling the middle and the capture points. Battles are lost this way. Sometimes you have to be aggressive and push hard. Sometimes you have to give up ground (which requires you to have the ground to give up in the first place!) and fight on the run. Sometimes you even need to be willing to sacrifice yourself to save the win. The trick is knowing what to do at any given time, depending on what's happening around you, or even far from you. This comes with experience, and situational awareness.
