1) Gun range is also dictated by max gun elevation and the height of the main fire control director, which can vary between ships.

2) Hitpoints are dictated by size and tonnage, not armor thickness.

You are absolutely right about gun elevation, but I guess it is hard to determine what the Amagi would really have had. Some minor research shows a max elevation of 30 degrees, which compared to the Nagato's refit turrets had a max 43 degrees.

If HP is supposed to be dictated by size and tonnage, why is there such a huge difference between the Nagato and the Colorado?  Colorado class weights in at 32,600 long tons compared to the Nagato's 32,200 long tons.

Now, the Nagato's refit in 1944 made it 38,510 long tons.  Meanwhile after the refits to the Colorado class had it weighing in at 38,200 long tons and with the addition of larger torpedo bulges would add in another 2,000 long tons making the Colorado weigh in over 40,000 long tons.

That I can't explain. Colorado is a very compact ship though, Nagato very long - that might have influenced WG's decision to give Nagato that much higher HP than Colorado.

Honestly though, if I could have my way I'd drop another 10k HP on Colorado and give her like 15% better dispersion.

Armor has to be a factor in the HP equation.  If it is just based on long tons and size it does not add up.   The Amagi class was supposed to weight in at 47,000 long tons and 826 feet long; compared to the 38,500 long tons and 738 ft long Nagato.

The Amagi only has 1300 hp extra based on 9,000 long tons? yea something does not add up.

And then the North Carolina weights in at 46,700 long tons, with much better armor, but has 300 hp less than the Amagi.

Now I understand they "need to balance" but buffing one ship that is supposed to be weaker and then nerfing a ship that should be stronger just does not add up in my brain.

But I digress.

Then why do South Carolina and St Louis have roughly the same HP?

No idea, especially since the South Carolina was at 16,000 long tons compared to the St Louis 9,000.

Guessing 7000 tons means nothing in HP, nor armor.

After coming from the Nagato I thought I would enjoy the extra speed and turret. I find myself carrying less games and doing the same average dmg as my Nagato. Amagi punishes you more since you face tougher opponents. Amagi is easy to citadel too and takes forever to turn. Not a bad ship just not as good for tier as Nagato IMO.

I only play American battleships and the Tirpitz. I always consider the Amagi a priority target since it's easy to kill; it makes more sense to take out soft targets that do more damage first as you reduce the enemy's ability to damage you more quickly.

At this point, though, I've given up on Japanese ships in general and am just waiting for the German fleet. They're almost exclusively fragile pieces of junk; I managed to citadel a Kuma with a Nicholas destroyer. Kind of like almost everything else made in Japan during that era, they'll fall apart if you look at them wrong.

Amagi was not a bad ship for the time that i played it, I've moved on from it now though. But to me,it just wasn't a keeper. Amagi has proven without a doubt that US guns are using super heavy projectiles, because north carolina is able to easily pen stuff that amagi's gun really struggle with. Plus having an only 19.9 K range on a ship with battlecruiser armor, and 5 turrets making hull angling a little tougher, as well as being as long as an Iowa, making it an easier target, for me, North carolina is the keeper, not amagi. While amagi does have slightly better firepower, and the AA on both ships is pretty comparable, to me, North Carolina is just the all round better ship. And really, my tirpitz is matching my amagi in average damage. Only reason my North Carolina doesn't have as good of an average, I didn't know the game as well when i was playing it.

Now i am just building up enough free XP to get yamato, because i am not playing Izumo.

Not only that but Izumo would set me back almost 29 million credits. With me already having montana, and all my other ship lines in T7, I am already at the position of where i still need to actually buy the ranger and the hatsuharu to where i can continue on those lines. I reserched them a while ago, but lacked the credits to acquire them. It take me far too long to grind out the credits i would have to cough up for Izumo. By the time i could grind up the credits I'd have enough free XP for yamato anyway.
