I know many people don't like this ship (and for good reason), but I was just wondering what could be done to make it a tad more effective. With a range of only 6.3 km, she is borderline useless. She is beautiful though, and I'd love for it to be more plausible to use her.

Can we get some Albany love?

Better view range & maybe a tad of shooting range is all I ask.

I like my Albany. It's not a good ship but is adequate for the role it is meant to serve.

Albany is T2, so bring a captain that has T4 range skill and then watch, as you kill everything in your range, because most players at T2 haven't grasped the concepts of WoWs yet.

P.S. I don't have a single captain with T4 skill yet.

Even using the captain range skill I don't find it to be worth playing.

You need the skill that extends the guns range.  Then you'll get about 7.8km with the guns.  Not fantastic, but much better than default.

She's certainly not noob-friendly, but with a 14 or 16 point Commodore or R. Admiral on board the Albany does quite well.  For me things with the Albany started off quite badly but it's turned out to be one of the most successful ships I've played so far in the game.  It's not a ship that does well with the boot Ensign on board and the player that's still trying to figure things out.  It's meant for experienced players with experienced, multi-point captains.

There is a reason they gave it out as a gift ship, it wasn't gonna sell with that gun range as a premium. But eh, I got it for free, and I find the challenge welcome every once in a while. That said, it's far from balanced or even remotely good to play on a regular basis.

Compare her gunrange to that on the Diana for a real head-scratcher.  :teethhappy:

The main problem is the non-existent range. Literally everything it sees can outrange it by 2km+, even comparable pre-1900 stuff. Not sure why they nerfed it for the sake of nerfs.

I platooned with a friend in a Diana not long ago. Amusingly, by WG's 'ratings' the Albany is better in almost every way, including 'artillery', despite having fewer guns broadside and HALF the range. Even the secondaries have less range than Diana's, despite being 4.7" guns vs 3".

I like that little ship, 61% win rate so far. You have to use cover for approach but once you are in range you can wreck just about anything although you will struggle against BB's and the St Louis. Bumping the range up to 7.5 would make a big difference but with the tier 4 captains skill it would not be overpowered.

The captain skills that upgrade the guns help, but not much.

Yeah you can switch a normal captain to the ship and back without any penalty, but honestly i don't know if theres a point.  I think the only reason to play the ship is to beat noobs in a much worse ship.

It is out ranged by everything including DD's. I use it for captain training and a quick and easy 40 to 50K net in almost any battle.

The view range bugs me more than the gun range, although that's bad too.  I hate being shot by St Louises that I cannot see.

I kinda play mine more like a USN DD and use islands to try and get into firing range. Had a guy 1 match questioning why I wasn't shooting at the guy 7k away from me... lol.

I like it, with my Pensacola captain in it for training. :)  Fun to drive around, and good learning how to manuver your way into better positions. I've learned a fair amount about using the terrain driving her.  :)

What role is that? And arguments that accept that the ship is inferior to other ships in the type and needs a niche playstyle are unacceptable.

Using it like a PT boat and hugging islands to avoid long range duels works well.
