Hello all, I've been doing some personal research into the the Reichsmarine and am having a problem with finding one very small bit of information. Right now I have been trying to find out exactly what kinds of ships were kept in service after WW1 and I have been able to identify the classes of all the warships except for a single destroyer/torpedo boat, G6. Anyone able to identify the class of this ship? Its not of huge importance but its driving me mad because its the only one I can't identify.

Have you searched in Navypedia?

Yep, the the lowest 'G' I can find is G7. It's odd because based off of my (very limited) knowledge of German ship numbers there should be a series or two of ships number G1-6 but I cant seem to find them anywhere. Of course I could just be failing and not noticing it in a list

Hm, I haven't been able to find anything either. I'm not sure.

Still no luck, I'm finding the whole thing to be quite odd because all of the lists of ships kept by the Reichsmarine from WW1 include this ship but going through the destroyers and torpedo boats of the Kaiserliche Marine have no ship with this designation.

Here is one list of ships, looking at the service records of all the ships on it confirm its accuracy apart from that damned G6! :sceptic:

I'm going to guess that it was actually V6, which served in the Reichsmarine

I believe you are correct, I'm thinking that whoever came up with these lists got mixed up, put down both G6 and V6 and simply assumed that there was a G6. Another less plausible explanation is that there was some confusion regarding the G/6 torpedo.

Either way I am now pretty sure that there was no ship of this designation, thanks for the help guys :honoring:

Most likely a mistake/confusion, this is the list in Conway's All the World's Fighting Ships, 1922-1946:

No, German destroyers were numbered sequentially with the letter being the yard where they were built, V6 was followed by G7, G12 was followed by S13 and so on.

Thank you I was trying to figure that out.  This is a different nomenclature then say the Schnellboot S-Boat or the Z-boat Zerstoror?

Thank you for the confirmation on the destroyer and for the correction regarding the ID system.:honoring:

Yeah, those used the same index independently from the yard. The nomenclature used for the Kaiserliche Marine destroyers reflected the high degree of freedom enjoyed by private yards at the time, not only in Germany like it's mentioned in the wiki. In comparison the relatively obscure motor torpedo boats of the Kaiserliche Marine, the LM-Boot, used the same index, reflecting a common design.

You're welcome.
