It's not hacks. If you're being lit by carrier planes and your AA is on, its your own fault. Take this lesson to heart my friends.

A destroyer driver in my last battle called out our carrier for hacking when he had his fighters above the DD. He had his AA on still and was getting lit at 4-5 km.

Later in the battle I told him that if he had his AA off he would've been harder to spot. Of course he turns around and continues with the hacks claims.

My purpose for making this post is to inform new DD players that it is not hacks.

I blurred out the name to avoid naming and shaming.

// my first post of this sort. If I did something offensive here please tell me and I will delete the post.

Some players honestly don't know about turning AA off, but if the player didn't listen about being able to turn it off...well, that's on him....turning AA off in a DD is pretty much standard practice from what I've seen.

I didn't know US DDs cared about being revealed? I mean it's not like their job requires it. They're super squishy gun boats with torpedoes that you can launch as a last second hail mary if you ever find yourself within 5k of something you shouldn't be.

US DDs have to be particularly careful on when to use their AA, as those dual-purpose guns will reveal you when they open up at 5km.

And if there's a Pensacola tailing you, you need to be wary of that as well.

Planes still spot DDs with the AA off...having the AA on just makes it that much easier for the planes to spot them.

That. If you have an air detection range of 5.1 km, leaving that AA on with your 5km DP guns isn't going to kill ya. You want to turn AA off in smokescreen though, it just help to hide you better from the planes when the CV is trying to keep you lighted up.

With the gun range skill, US DDs will reveal themselves immediately to any aircraft within 6km rather than the 3.somethingkm they would normally be spotted at.  An air group that might have otherwise passed by without seeing you will light you up from a country mile away.

20% increase to 3.something is only 3.something + 0.6. Unless you just spent a whole cartload of credits on an AA range mod as well, then that's 3.something +1.2.

Main guns are dual purpose with a 5km range, that's +1km with the skill.

the "3.something" is the air spotting range. Even without range skills/mods, firing at 5km will light you up to squadrons that otherwise wouldn't know you were there.

Most DDs without DP guns will be spotted in open water before their guns fire, however.

If your AA range is equal to or less than your air spotting range, don't bother. Smoke also still covers you even with AA on.

I almost never turned my AA off in my Kagero. It's AA range was 3km while I got my air spotting range down to about the same with maxed out camo. Actually shooting anything down with an AA rating of 13 was an entirely different matter.

If the carrier is sitting fighters on top of you or just flying squadrons over you to something else, you might as well turn them on.

Otherwise, keep them off.

I wish WG would display the AA indicator at all times. Most new players don't even realize they can do that because they don't see an indicator until their AA guns are turned off.

He should know that it doesn't work in combat then.

LIES!  Star Trek Online says BoP's have fancy battle cloaks while raptors and the Defiant only get bog standard cloaks that can't be used during battle!

Then again, they need to upgrade to Romulan Battle Cloaks; those things work regardless.  Some even let you fire from cloak.
